Britain's biggest morons burn cardboard Grenfell Tower on bonfire

My point was this - it's fucking easy to condemn these dickheads and join the mob who will now trash their lives, jobs etc in the name of justice.

But we should stop and ask this - how is it that the popular outrage and demand that something be done' feels louder and shriller about a video, than the outrage at the causes of the fire itself which actually killed 72 people or in fact the outrage at teenagers being murdered every three days in the same city.

There is something deeply disturbing about the mocking of an act being more offensive than the act itself.

ETA - weigh the media coverage of the video in comparison to the murder of 3 teenagers in the same week. In the same city. I know which offends me more.

I've always hated bonfire night.
The original "purpose" seems understandable enough, but I wonder how much general anti-"Catholic" sentiment has been a feature over the years.

Instant gratification of justice I suspect sadly. Many people will feel these arseholes will get whats coming sooner rather than later, and it being a social media shit storm they can contribute to it. It will be likely years before justice for Grenfell is achieved or indeed the underlying problems of teenagers getting murdered will get resolved. sad but true. :(

I have seen this point being made repeatedly over the last 24 hours...Of course it's a good point to make if it is intended to keep the case against those that are responsible for the deaths just as prominent in our minds. I haven't however seen anyone actually saying that this racist mocking is worse than the institutionalised classism and racism that is responsible and caused those people to die in the first place. I see both things as connected, they come from the same attitudes and utter disregard for the lives of people seen as 'other' and therefore worthless.

I agree with the first half of that. I remain to be convinced about the causes of Grenfell being properly brought to light and I see no evidence of anyone wanting to engage over the wanton murder of kids. Don't black lives matter?

yes, you should ask that. you should ask how some things receive great media attention, while equally or more deserving things are reduced to a paragraph on a news website if covered at all. but tbh it's frankly peculiar to introduce that conversation or debate, worthy as it is, desirable though it is to have it, on this thread.

tbh this doesn't feel louder or shriller than outrage at the fire or cause of the fire, and it is disturbing to see you say that. where have the demonstrations been on the streets about this? maybe you don't recall the actual fire, or the days afterwards, that clearly. i do: and this is very different from that.

e2a: but if you want a big long discussion on media coverage - new thread, not this one.

Knife crime and the deaths of young people is news almost every week...it's top of the news items in London today again. People are engaging with it.

Did you notice that all the people depicted in the effigy were BAME?

You could always start a thread on it. There's plenty to discuss. I don't think the explosion in homelessness in London is unrelated to the rise in violence. The rising inequality of British society in general and London society in particular is an important causal factor in both. Tie to that 'austerity' and the fact that council funds for youth projects are being slashed all around the city. It's only likely to get worse.

You are mistaken if you think people posting on this thread about this means they don't care about these other things.

Nope, don't agree at all that the outrage over these racist idiots' video feels bigger than the outrage over Grenfell.
