Brentwood Town vs Dulwich Hamlet - Tuesday 12th April

Sorry, what a load of shit! I have PROUDLY displayed England flags at football, the patron saint of many countries and places. To me it symbolises what a great country we can be, and the inclusiveness of England & the UK.
That's lovely, but you surely must have an understanding how a ground festooned with nothing but England flags may seem less than inviting to all members of the community?

There's certainly research that seems to back up the supposition.

we used to fly st Georges flag (all be it actually a parliamentary flag of Cromwell forces during the English Civil War) no prob with that or straight St Georges flag or union jack or for that matter Welsh, Scottish or Irish or Allies in WW2 (at Dulwich Hamlet we love flags)

EDL tried putting a St Georges flag at Bromley Fc with Bromley Division on it - the club declined to allow it to be displayed

If there's a mix of flags, then that is indeed different.

I was annoyed by the fact that it made it tricky to pick out the goal frame at that end during the second half.

i hate to point it out, but england is not only not a patron saint but not a saint at all.
It only becomes racist if you accept our national; flags have been hijacked by the far-right minority!
yeh it's never been the flag of a slave-owning nation.

And its very bizarre to be a racist in a place where everyone looks like you? -its actually more likely

The thing is it's easy for someone in a position of privilege to assume they must have been mistaken or that we've sorted racism and it's no longer a problem. Similar could be said of sexism at football. We haven't sorted it and it still needs to be reported and dealt with appropriately.
But it's difficult to report something if you're not certain it was an offence. (In this case it seems it probably was.) Ironically if we hadn't had so many of our own vocal supporters it would have been easier to tell whether or not it was what I thought it was.

Having arrived just after the first goal I initially stood on the edge of the Rabble closest to the small group of home fans at the same end. After one chorus of the "We Look Like Tuscany" song one of them bellowed "You look like cunts" and his mate laughed deliriously as if Oscar Wilde's wittiest ever observation had just been made for the first time, and another of them shouted a homophobic comment that I can't remember precisely, so by that stage of the game I'd already concluded that at least some of them were morons. I wasn't really sure whether they were spoiling for a fight, annoyed that we'd ignored their territorial markings in the shape of their flags and taken up residence at 'their' end, or were simply following the modern trend of shouting abusive comments at complete strangers and excusing it as 'banter'. So I moved away from them to the other side of the goal, mainly because I was already pissed off at missing the start of the match and wanted to concentrate on the game instead of enduring a bunch of loud and stupid halfwits at close quarters.

I'm happy to report what I can if it helps, but I don't have a smartphone or use 'apps', I can't remember precisely what the homophobic comment was and didn't see exactly who made it, and can't really give any information other than "I heard some home fans making 'monkey noises' late in the first half". I guess 'the group of fans with the big flags' should at least enable the home club to narrow down who was responsible.

Logic is rarely high on their agenda.

Yes - but its bizarre - if you live somewhere where there is no-one that looks different to you - why have any fear? Do English racists rant against Mexicans or French Canadians? Racism is odd generally, but to be afraid of some people that are not even on your radar, so odd.

why does the greater fear of outsiders in areas with a homogenous population strike you as bizarre?
