Black metal that is not politically dodge

no, it's not the same guy. i think there's a lot of vegan anarchists into BM though tbf - there certainly is in most other extreme metal subgenres, and there's always a load of crossover between them...

Hipsters, innit.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transilvanian_Hunger#Controversy for more on that not so great Darkthrone thingie. They're a funny lot, and I honestly don't think they really care much about politics in any structured kinda way. They're more like - fuck all of this, let's be misanthropes, so they probably think flirting with some of the right-wing shit is funny in a kinda teenage angsty way. Fenris always tries to come across as really scary and shit, but he's about 5 scrawny feet and works for the Norwegian Post Office :D

He's good mates with some old friends of mine, they seem to think he's a decent chap all told.

There's also this

I don't like that thing in metal that makes a virtue out of apathy towards to politics. Fair enough if you hate the stuff, but why do your jokes always just happen to place you with the right?

It's more necro that way.:rolleyes: A lot of these guys are fundame(n)tally nerds with a terrible sense of humour.

it's a stance, presumably taken because they want to sell records to people who aren't nazis, and they want to sell records to nazis too.

I suppose. Then again it's not commercial suicide to tell these people to fuck off either. Satyricon have been voiciferously anti-nazi for example.

Shame the main man there is such an odious cunt in real life. Not politically, personally.

Is he? Dish le dirt!
I can't recall all the details - a very good friend of mine grew up with him back outside Oslo. The gist of it was that success went to his head (and lots and lots of coke) and he started doing the classical dickhead routine wrt to friends, bandmates etc. I can always ask said mate for juicier stories. :D

Yeah, same as skinheads. Every one I ever met or heard ofr trying to put forward a "no politics, let's get along in the scene" kind of attitude was a righty.

I'm a big mad fan of that band, but I'm not adverse to juicy insulting gossip

indeed it isn't. which kind of suggests that under the stance, the 'no politics' people lean towards the nazis...
I think for people growing up outside of Scandinavia it can be difficult to see some of the nuances in the Norse pagan anti-Christian stuff, which for sure resonates with a lot of racist/nazi stuff, but is also in many significant ways separate from it.

I'm not quite sure what this post means. When I was a young kid in the 90s and I heard that Norwegian metallers were burning churches, I thought it was audacious and fabulous, although I had misgivings about the loss of cool architecture. I'm only reconsidering that attitude these days because I've been made aware that there's an anti-semitic aspect to that stuff. These are extreme right wing people, I know now, not simply people with a beef with Christianity.

I understand how anyone would hate the horrible invader of Christianity. I'm an aetheist through. I may think pagan religion is morally and socially a better thing than Abrahamic religion (I do) bit it's still a religion at the end of the day and would have ended up as corrupt

Sure, those guys were evil cunts for the most part. I mean paganism and the patriotism that is attached to it more broadly in Scandinavian culture - it's really something we grow up with, it's a huge part of our education and history and language.

I'm not sure what I'm trying to explain here. I guess my basic point is I know a a good few people who're deep into the Norwegian pagan scene, some of which are part of the BM scene too, and most of the BM scenesters are not right-wing but left-wing insofar as they care about politics IME.

here's the list he's come up with for you - i'm sure you'll know many of them already...

This includes bands who I've not known to make any ridiculous political statements. I'm willing to be proven wrong, because in making this list I remembered just how many awesome bands HAVE made ridiculous statements:
Emperor
Enslaved
Negura Bunget
Wolves in the Throne Room
Dragged into Sunlight
Alcest
Ulver
Deathspell Omega
Blut Aus Nord
Immortal (just don't watch their videos)
Arcturus
Windir
Watson
Melechesh
Xasthur
Peste Noire
Year of No Light
Black Witchery
Leviathan
Judas Iscariot
Botanist
Arkhon Infaustus
Absu
Tsjuder
Lantlos
Vlad Tepes

Bands known or strongly rumoured to be idiots, but worth a non-financial investment:

Drudkh
Winterfylleth
Taake
Shining (the Norwegian one)
Mayhem
Darkthrone
Burzum
Mutiilation

Shining doesn't belong on that last list methinks.
