Best/Worst Derbies ?

Looking at the fallout from the Toon vs mackem game, it is probabaly the most bitter derby I have been to. There is real tangible hate between the two lots - its diffucult to describe the atmosphere if you havent been there

Any worse derbies you have attended ?

Bristol has long had a tradition of real nastiness. Gone somewhat out of sight given the two teams' long separation (though we're a little closer together after tonight eh lads :D ) but I can remember several derby matches at their place when I genuinely think I was lucky to escape unhurt

Roma v Lazio can be very very nasty. The last Derby I was at in April last year Roma had a mob of 1,000 waiting for Lazio. Been numerous serious running battles in the stadium itself and outside on many many occasions.

Celtic v Rangers was at one time much, much nastier than it is now.

Nasty: Blackburn V Burnley, The Old Firm, Boca V River Plate, The Rome Derby, West Ham V millwall, Swansea V Cardiff, Forest V Derby.

Camp: The Old Farm derby, Liverpool V Everton and palace V Brighton.

Further to my Bristol post: if anyone can think of another rivalry which has resulted in a (successful) arson attack on one of the protagonists' home ground, I'll be happy to consider it. There was a wedding reception taking place inside the stand at the time

fair enough but there was clearly significant political manipulation going on there - wider than just the football

Yeah. Not sure it counts as derby violence, it seems to have been more than that.

What was the arson incident at Bristol anyway?

1991 - c*ty fans on their way back from a defeat at West Brom diverted to Twerton Park and successfully torched the main stand. As I said, the social club inside was playing host to a wedding party at the time. We spent most of the following season playing in front of an even more ramshackle ground than usual. The rivalry in the 1990s was especially intense and bitter. Numerous incidents over the next ten years or so of tit for tat attacks on rivals' pubs, pitch invasions, televised near riots etc. I can remember bricks being lobbed into the back of the Pop Side at Twerton during a derby fixture one year (around 1996 I think). There was very little love lost between the respective playing staffs either, according to various ex-Rovers players I've seen interviewed/chatted with

There's always been rumours that the South Stand fire at Eastville in 1984 was started by their lot as well, but nothing concrete

Football is weird.

Football is weird.
yeah

anyway, not trying to say that Bristol is absolutely the craziest/nastiest rivalry... but it's certainly shown the capacity to be a lot more vicious than people outside the West Country give it credit for

The Old Farm? sorry fr my ignorance.
Edit-Norwich-Ipswich possibly?

South Yorks v Notts derbies have been a bit bitter since 1984...

Can you think of another Derby where a rocket was fired from one goal to the terrace behind the opposing goal resulting in the death of a fan?

Roma v Lazio October 1978.

Not sure what they were thinking but my Dad & Grandad took me to West Ham/Millwall in the late 70s  Tbf we were going pretty much every home game at the time. I tied my scarf round my wrist like I'd seen on packs of lads coming in from Tilbury, Grays and Dagenham. Got double smacked round the head from both Dad & Grandad :D The hairiest I've been to since was Cov/Brum in the early 90s. I went with a couple of Cov fans and it felt like every step from their house to the ground was a step up in tension. At one point, there's a subway under a couple of roundabouts on the way to the ground where it was just too packed and people started getting arsey. The only time I've properly feared people were going to die in a crush. Inside the ground was a fucking nightmare; the amount of coins/lighters getting thrown across the terraces and onto the pitch was unreal. Shit game too. West Hame/Millwall this year was a pleasant day out in comparison.

Trees V Rams is pretty tame these days, the odd handbags but nothing major for ages, maybe Derby need to mob up with Leicester again...

There was that small matter of Forest fans throwing Ram skulls through a pub window a couple of years back, and an absolutely ridiculous assault in a Nottingham bar. Seats thrown across the room and a poor old bloke right in the middle of it scared shitless.

The Derby Vs Leeds rivalry is probably more heated these days.

I remember Ilkeston getting to the FA Cup first round at Scunthorpe and the away end getting tear gassed because Forest and Derby were fighting each other in there. Maybe about ten years ago

Cardiff v. Swansea will get nastier now that it will be bigger.

You reckon? I'm not so sure. It will be policed to the absolute max and the new stadium gives absolutely no opportunity to mix. The worst of the fans are now at opposite ends of the ground. Don't think there were any incidents when we met in the championship.

Wasn't a derby, but that happened at a Wales game some years ago.

Oh I know they won't be able to fight inside the stadium. Maybe not outside either, I suppose it depends on how well-organized the police are.

Old firm,as long as they keep shitting in our shoes and we keep pissing in their Bovril there will never be peace.

I've never been to either of these but Galatasaray-Fenerbache and Boca Juniors-River Plate are both supposed to be a bit tasty.

Rangers v Celtic is the worst I've been to (in the 80's). Derby-Forest and Villa-Birmingham can be nasty too.

Real-Barca is a fairly tame affair - hardly any away fans go to it!
