Best No/Low Alcohol Beers

Santino

lovelier than lovely
I've been enjoying Bavaria, which despite its name is Dutch. Available in Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Waitrose.

I tried Becks Blue once; I found it awful. In fact I've tried a couple of others, I'm sure of it. If I'm not drinking I'll avoid beer and go for ginger ale or J20.

I think I had an Erdinger with .5% alcohol which was ok , and Swans used to do a no alcohol lager in cans. When I wasn't drinking I'd have ginger beer or ice tea or lime and soda .

Be aware if buying the Pistonhead Flat Tire there’s also the normal alcoholic version, at something like 5%. If the top of the can is silver it’s the booze free one.

It's a revelation. Very close to its alcoholic cousin. I mean obviously it loses out on body and some flavours, but is far and away the closest to a proper beer I've had. Miles better than Nanny state imo.

I don't do non-drinking days, and haven't done for 30 years. But within my awareness of that I have taken to drinking Sainsbury's Basics Bitter on my self-defined 'low days'. It is not non-alcohol, but it is 2.1 per cent, low enough for it to be physically impossible for me at least to get drunk on it, and it costs £1.10 for four cans of 440 ml. It is blandly inoffensive but with enough of an alcoholic edge to feel like a drink. And it is extremely cheap.

I've actually gone back to Nanny state, which I hated the first time I tried it. Dunno if I got a duff bottle or something, but really liking it now.

Recently tried it after seeing you mention it here. It was indeed very good and light years ahead of the swilled-out-ashtray flavoured low alcohol beers I had the misfortune to try some years back.

There's more coming available every week. Lots of small breweries now producing alcohol free now.
I had Infinite Session for the first time last week but my regular choice for home is Nanny State because our local co-op sells it.

Drank a bottle of Nanny State last night. It certainly tastes like its missing something, but it was reasonably palatable. It might require a couple more goes and comparing to other options before I can form a proper opinion.

I tried Nanny State yesterday and agree that it has that 'something missing' taste about it, like unsalted food. I also had an Infinite Session lager, which was ok, but I still prefer Bavaria. On Sunday I tried a St Peters Without, which is an excellent name, but it was a bit too stouty I thought.

Did finally get around to trying Ghost Ship and can confirm that whatever it is Nanny State is missing, Ghost Ship has it.

That being said, I prefer a low alcohol beer to a no alcohol beer and Brewdog's Dead Pony Club is great.

I was chatting to someone from the Adnams brewery the other weekend and they explained to me that the reason Ghost Ship 'alcohol free' tastes so good is essentially because they brew a full version of Ghost Ship then remove almost all the alcohol via a reverse osmosis stage (one of only a very small number of breweries in Europe that have the kit, apparently).

I tried the St. Peters no alcohol one this eve and it tasted like horrible malt loaf gone bad. Probably wasn't cold enough, which is key with these drinks.

The Budweiser one is decent for cooking lager, probably because the real thing doesnt taste of much either.

Erdinger and Schneider Weiss are the best I've tried so far. Again, have to be very chilled though.

Tonight, I have tried Nanny State, Koppaberg Alcohol free, Peroni Libero and Bavaria Shandy.

The Nanny State was the most like a drink with booze, the Koppaerg was tasty like any other sugary fruity not booze drink, the Peroni was passable though, given the effect of normal Peroni, seemed furthest from 'real'. The shandy will be perfect for pretend boozing in the sunshine, I think

its OK if you split your evening alternating between that and a normal beer when its rounds time. it does go straight through you though- all alcohol free beers seem to do that

Erdinger weissbrau is drinkable. I don't know if it's different to the Erdinger mentioned earlier

Just having my first bottle of Franziskaner Weissbier
Bought from Sainsbury’s, £1.20

Nice enough, flavour’s there. Not a Sainsbury’s product I don’t think as they have their own website listed on the back of the bottle.

and

I think it's an independent brewery, their 'real' beer is great too. Schneide Weisse is similar and very good in non alcohol and full fat versions too, if you spot it.
