BBC6 Radio - comment, discussion and moans

The best of all the NTS hosts, Zakia, has now moved to 6 Music. That's a real coup for them I think as she will be a household name one day for her writing and presenting skills - not to mention impeccable music taste.

It's a big loss for NTS but it will continue to be 10 times better than 6 Music even after her departure.

Has she actually moved to 6 or is she just filling for GP?

She did her last NTS show this morning with her mum in the studio to offer emotional support. Not a dry eye in the chat.

Whatever is playing now sounds like every cliched sample and loop from 20 years ago being played in endless repetition.

I hated every second of Nick Grimshaw that I ever heard on Radio 1. And I can't stand whenever he turns up on the telly panel shows and big fat quizzes of who-gives-a-Jimmy-Carr-shit.

But, I'm going to be a bit contrary when it comes to his current 6 Music slot - he's been decent to my ear. When it's just him (instead of having co-presenters and on-air producers) he's toned down what I presume was a character he was playing - much less annoying, more personable, even likeable. Music wise, there's plenty I like and plenty I don't but that's always going to be the way.

I wish Lauren Laverne all the best and a speedy recovery; and yes I much prefer her on the morning airwaves. But Nick Grimshaw to me is actually turning out to be an unexpectedly decent stand-in.

There, I said it.

I've come back to 6 Music - for now. Not a big Lauren Laverne fan though, if I'm allowed to say that in the current circumstances. When she comes back I'll go back to streaming Radcliff and Maconie, Iggy Pop, etc. on my morning runs.

Tbf the Vietnamese language cover of La Isla Bonita was quite the bop once it got going

I love a good foreign language cover.

Here's a whole show of it if it grows on you.

The Jamz programme was fascinating and it's something that isn't recognised enough - women artists and DJs in the reggae/soundsytems world.

Put me in the mood for some more sounds & found this mini documentary on the World Service. It highlights on Zouk, hip hop and other Black Music in Europe - again it's excellent to hear these docs on sometimes neglected genres

It's only one ep, apparently there's a series of them but couldn't find it

Jamz' show today has been absolutely superb - a "women in soundsystems" special - two hours of flawless reggae plus fascinating interviews with some really excellent women. Recommended.
yes thanks from me too...ripped it (cut the bbc6 trails and news) and will upload to youtube at somepoint, hopefully will avoid copyright strike

ETA: Mentions Rusty Rebel "the first woman in the UK to own a Soundsystem," ...heard her play last month on Real Roots Radio....a kiiilllleerrr show!!! Deep deep deep selection. Worth looking our for her. Hadnt heard of her before, now twice in a month

I cant believe I'm saying this, but Nick Grimshaw is actually quite good. Not missing Laverne at all, although of course I hope she's recovering well.
When I saw his mug pop up when I tuned in today I thought I was on the wrong station lol
So far so good though.
