Dont rush out just yet .Playing around at work yesterday I was shocked to see all the merch available on bands websites for bands that no longer exist.
Some that spring to mind are The Who, Zeppelin, Slayer, System of A Down. just why?
As an aside, I see that Alice Cooper is about to launch a range of make up.
Going back many years, Zeppelin famously never released a single.Hard rock bands tends to fare a lot better on album and touring sales than they do with singles. Metallica have zero #1 hits, but four #1 albums and sell out every tour. Net worth estimated around $1B USD.

America. Not UK.They did.
I remember my local Harlequin records having imported Led Zeppelin singles from America.
Turns out they released quite a few.

I was going to say that I saw them live last year and I'm sure they were selling t-shirts then, but then I remembered that Supertramp and Superchunk are actually two different bands, so I withdraw my observation on that point.Trying to add a bit of balance to this thread....I was looking at the Supertramp website today, and believe all 5 members are still alive, there was no merch, not even a record for sale. A band that don't appear to have cashed in and sold out.

I was definitely given some promotional Dandy Warhols rolling papers at some point long ago as well.
I wouldn't fit in those
Just dug around a bit and found a picture on their instagram, I imagine McDonald's legal department might make it a bit difficult to sell grimace_smoking_weed.jpeg merch in general, I remember some time ago noticing that they have to carefully sell their shirts as "Grim Guy Smoking Weed". Also, bugger, just reminded myself that the only place they're playing near me this summer is Outbreak and I have once again not got a ticket for it.seen quire a few bands with rolling papers. in my experialence they're usually a but shit tho!
my favourite chat pile merch has to be the grimace_smoking_weed.jpeg figurine, though I can't seem to find any images of it online so worried it was a fever dream.
I've posted Xiu Xiu a few times on here already, but does anyone fancy a Xiu Xiu cat nip jar?Xiu Xiu also have a lot of stuff, anyone want a Xiu Xiu jock strap?

Certainly not for the biggest grossing artist.Merch is essential for small, perennially unpopular bands.
Would have loved to see Chat Pile but couldn't quite summon the energy to travel to London for it....Just dug around a bit and found a picture on their instagram, I imagine McDonald's legal department might make it a bit difficult to sell grimace_smoking_weed.jpeg merch in general, I remember some time ago noticing that they have to carefully sell their shirts as "Grim Guy Smoking Weed". My impression was that it was increasingly vital for pretty much all bands now that spotify and the like have wiped out the actual paying for music part of the music business? Not many of them have knives though.Merch is essential for small, perennially unpopular bands.
Oh man, so yesterday, so cheap and tacky.

As if tour merch hasn't been around forever. The missus still has a tote bag from Millican's first tour after her Fringe success and that's got to be 15 years old. You should have seen the load of tat the League of Gentlemen tour had. (and I still bought a Hilary Briss fridge magnet)I see merch has spread to stand ups
It’s the way they sell ’em: standups across UK turn to merchandise for extra cash

It's OK, Cinzano, I'll be your friend.I guess Bowie was a pioneer in this regard
