Autumn International Rugby 2024

Elpenor

a clown’s heart and a mandolin
The autumn international rugby kicks off on Saturday November 2nd and continue over the rest of the November weekends. Expect lots of terrible moustaches as it’s also that time of year

Tv coverage is on TNT sports - this is a bad move I think. I am sure everyone remembers watching these matches on terrestrial as a kid. They are glorified friendlies and sometimes the matches are used to trial new players but the matches are often classics.

While it has been behind a paywall on Amazon prime video for the last few years, plenty of folk have that already for the deliveries and it was relatively easy to get a free month to watch the rugby for nowt. Not any more, so if you have TNT or discovery plus then you have access, if not you need to find another method.

There are a number of matches that stand out - full list below.

England have the big 3 southern hemisphere teams and Japan. I think they need to win 3 from 4 as a minimum and a statement win over New Zealand - having lost narrowly twice to them down under - would be a good start. Their squad is fairly well established now, so they need to start producing results. South Africa will be a huge challenge and an improvement from the World Cup semi final result would be huge.

Wales haven’t won a match this year and have a fairly callow squad as the rebuild continues. They simply must beat Fiji to get some momentum for the next two games. Australia who are their second opponent are also rebuilding, and beat Wales twice over the summer down under. I expect South Africa will play a more developmental team against them.

Ireland will want to exact revenge over New Zealand following their World Cup quarter final heartbreak. This will be the match they will target. It will be the last matches they play with Andy Farrell for a while as he will shortly be seconded to the British and Irish Lions. So a great chance for them to impress him ahead of the tour next year. The other games will be fairly standard, with Australia, been coached by their former boss, Joe Schmidt, the other game of interest.

Scotland have a lighter schedule with the mighty Portugal one of their games :hmm: this is a decent Scotland back line though who can turn it on if not quite back it up. I can see them beating Australia and giving South Africa a bit of a contest.

Of the teams coming up from the South, New Zealand have three big banana skins. Their new coach Scott Robertson is under a bit of pressure and his selection so far been erratic. Perhaps things will click on this tour.

South Africa have the strongest team, and a South Africa second team would beat most other teams too. They’ve started playing more expansively now they have a New Zealander as an attack coach; part of this is due to an exciting new fly half called Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, however sadly he is injured. Aphelele Fassi has broken into the team too and he is a wonderful runner at full back.

Australia are starting to show promise but not yet results. They have a big new player, a rugby league convert called Joseph Suaalii who is an outside back (wing, centre, full back) who is yet to play a game of Union. They also have ex Leicester winger Harry Potter in their squad which the commentators must be thrilled about, the jokes just write themselves!

A couple of rule changes and God knows rugby likes to tinker with the rules - they will be trialling 20 minute red cards. So basically if you make a high tackle and it’s at the yellow card threshold you leave the field and there’s a TMO bunker review while the match continues (as happened in the last World Cup and six nations) If it’s a yellow card you come back on as usual after 10 minutes. If it’s confirmed as a red card you are off the field for 20 minutes. You will then be replaced by someone off the bench and your team go back to playing with 15 players.

Of course you can still get a straight red card but this would be for punching someone rather than a high tackle.

What it means is that a high tackle in the 2nd minute that merits a red card won’t mean a team play almost an entir match

Confused? You should be. Rugby does this to you to test your loyalty.

More usefully, referees will explain certain decisions eg yellow cards / TMO referrals this will be audible in the ground. Finally!

Are there no matches on Freeview? I'm thinking ITV4, Quest or DMAX.

Nothing live. I am not sure about highlights

It’s £31 for all the matches as apparently you can buy TNT sports for just a month. Such a shit move

England v New Zealand tomorrow at 1510, I’m going to miss it but will try and catch in the evening

I have discovered that Wales matches will also be on S4C (Welsh commentary) but believe no terrestrial highlights for other matches. Which is so stupid beyond belief

YouTube or streaming sites or torrents I guess

Yep I've watched a few matches on S4C - they also have some of the Welsh/Scottish/Irish union club games. I don't mind the Welsh commentary too much and I watched one match with English subtitled translation which was a bonus.

Did anyone see the English players' response to the New Zealand Haka in the recent international League game? They stood aggressively in a line right up on the half way line. A couple of New Zealand players went right up to them and were leaning into each other touching foreheads I really expected someone to get nutted

England won that 19-7 (great match) so that didn't have too much of an effect.

Eta: Forget that it was England v Samoa, England won 34-18

Didnt see it but ive always enjoyed seeing tbe Haka challenged. If thats not allowed they might as well go back to doing the Haka to the crowd as they used to.

Anyone think Marlers comment about the Haka will have any impact on the game tomorrow?
Marler is an idiot.

But he is right that the haka is a bit sanitised (can’t cross the line to challenge it or you’ll be fined) and the real drama and talking points that cut through beyond rugby fans happen when it’s responded to, which is kind of the intention as culturally it’s meant to be a challenge thrown down by Māori warriors

Local rugby club? That's where I'm going to watch it

not even a rugby fan but agree it's a shame these aren't on free TV. normally good for a few minutes between football matches ;-) and I do strangely have memories of these 'autumn tests' as a sort of calendar marker.

England v Wales Women's League international starting soon on BBC2

England v Samoa 2nd League international, coverage starts 2 o'clock. Interested to see what happens with the Haka this time after the near fisticuffs before the 1st international

Well, no that's not entirely correct. Hakas are performed at weddings, funerals, any state occasion as well as before sporting events. The All Blacks have two hakas - the most famous is Ka Mate, which yes was from a famous Maori warrior as his people were being slaughtered by the English. But there are hundreds of different hakas.

But it's a mark of respect mainly. Marler's a racist shit and was banned as such a few years ago.

Or you can buy an IPTV service for about 90p a week. The one I use has built in VPN, but I run Nord VPN anyway.

Meanwhile you have off-duty investment bankers at 'Twickers' singing a fucking slave song from the deep south, without even realising it

England v Samoa is good. George Williams was incredible that last game, not really seen him in the first 10 minutes though.

We’ve quite a good team out for the game tonight. Bealham at tight head should be interesting not a destructive scrummager but technically good. The fact that he’s fairly short May work in our favour.

Great to see Tadhg Bierne at 6, as we lose something at line out with McCarthy but bierne shored is up.

I think our real weakness is at 13. Ringrose is fine player but if you shoot up, make the tackle don’t leave a huge gap.

I expect the all blacks to kick and compete in the air as they have some great fetchers there.

I’m going to say Ireland’s +3

Listening to this on 5 live, pretty even but both sides making sloppy errors? 13-12 Ire early in 2nd half.

Well I was wrong, it seems that Bealham wasn’t up to it. Our back five too old or out of form, Crowley unsettled Frawley not up to it and the aerial contest is a great leveller. A rebuild is on the book for the summer and I’m expecting 3rd or 4th in the 6N.

We have a big problem at outhalf and across the front row. I’m not sure what’s coming through the provinces as I’ve lost touch a bit but the average age of that team must be in the 30’s. Interesting times ahead for a squad that peaked last year.

Frawley was the worst fly half substitute against New Zealand since last week. Very impressed with the AB defence.

Hot take I’m giving ahead of the England v Australia game is that an Ireland dominated lions team loses next summer

Right I think England need to win by 15 points and also need to score 30

Based on rankings this is 100% achievable and should happen

Borthwick sets up his teams against higher ranked opponents to have arm wrestle matches, aiming to be tight in defence, concede a low amount of penalties and be hard to beat in a low scoring match where there won’t be many tries. If this sounds familiar this is how Warren Gatland teams played. Problem is England aren’t winning these games.

Australia are a team that shouldn’t be given this respect though.

At half time this isn’t going to plan… I was going to add (but forgot as the game had started) that Borthwick is this generations Andy Robinson (a poor England coach who got sacked) and this is a match he really needs to win as England have only beaten Japan in their last five outings

Joe Smidt is a genius and I wouldn’t rule that out. I think Ireland won’t have as many Lions because I can see a bit of a fall off in the 6 Nations though I hope I’m wrong.

It will be interesting how the game this afternoon goes.

Ireland have the easier year this year with England and France at home though

Statement win for Australia

England got real problems, much like Exeter, whose defensive system they’re basically using they’re missing far too many tackles and coughing up too many points conceded. As soon as Tom Curry went off I knew they’d lose as it meant CCS would need to go 80 which he can’t.

Englands bench is a marked drop off which is why they tend to fade in the last 25 minutes

Positives - Ollie Sleightholme showed how good a finisher he is

Sometimes you dont like to see a fallen giant keep losing and be bad, even the Aussies. Good to see them play well and win 👏

Not a shock either, Gatland is going to be in big trouble as frankly I don’t see them beating Australia or South Africa though I expect both those teams to try and “manage” the Wales game with a weaker team
