Athletics - Running and Jumping and Throwing and stuff!

What proportion of medal hopes in athletics have medalled as compared to medal hopes in rowing , sailing and cycling?
About the same. And the gold in the long jump was not expected.

But you're being a bit silly taking medals for granted like that. It's a fuck of an achievement to do well in athletics events. Well done to the sailing winners, but you're comparing sports in which serious competitors worldwide number maybe in the thousands, compared to the hundreds of thousands.

You're also being disingenuous by picking out the groups that did well after the event. Of course, out of a set of groups, some will do better than others. If you'd predicted certain patterns before the start, you'd have some kind of point.

4 medal winners, as opposed to 5-8 predicted. 0 predicted as gold. Dai Greene may have been slightly disappointing, but otherwise everyone has outperformed expectation

to podium -same thing

The first example of "to podium" in the dictionary's database is a 2004 story in the Denver Post relating to a skiing article. The writer uses the reference "to podium" and adds an explanation "to finish third or higher".

What proportion of medal hopes in athletics have medalled as compared to medal hopes in rowing , sailing and cycling?
The Guardian predicted 9 British medals in the athletics, which was probably at the very optimistic end.

I think only 3 of those events where they predicted we might win a medal have passed and we've won 4 medals including 3 gold compared to their prediction of 3 medals including 1 gold. I'm sure UK Sports optimistic prediction for cycling medals was 10 and they've only won 9, so athletics is currently ahead of cycling. Think rowing is 9 medals won compared to 6 expected. Sailing is behind expectation currently (2 won to 3-5 expected).

As predicted

Heptathlon Jessica Ennis – gold

Worse than predicted

Men's 400m hurdles Dai Greene

Better than predicted

Men's 5,000m or 10,000m Mo Farah

Not predicted

Long jump - Greg Rutherford
Women's 400 metres - Christine Ohuruogo

Still to go (I think)

Men's 5,000m or 10,000m Mo Farah
Men's high jump Robbie Grabarz
Women's pole vault Holly Bleasdale
Women's 400m hurdles Perri Shakes-Drayton
Women's triple jump Yamilé Aldama
Men's triple jump Phillips Idowu
Men's 4x400m relay team

Men's high jump Robbie Grabarz
Women's pole vault Holly Bleasdale

Men's triple jump Phillips Idowu
first four have gone and were all outside the medals. Aldama was fourth, and unlucky. the first three were always very optimistic 'prospects'.

Idowu looks dodgy cos of the injury

Forgot about Bleasdale going out tonight. Didn't know about the triple jump or high jump. Think Shakes-Drayton is still in with a shout if GB win their appeal.

Updated based on more info

The Guardian predicted 9 British medals in the athletics, which was probably at the very optimistic end.

6 of those events where they predicted we might win a medal have passed and we've won 4 medals including 3 gold compared to their prediction of 6 medals including 1 gold. So they're slightly behind that very optimistic Guardian prediction and on track to potentially meet UK Sports minimum prediction of 5 medals.

For contrast, the Guardian predicted 13 medals for the cyclists including 6 gold. I think they have won 6 out of 9 but have won 3 they didn't list.

Better than expected

Men's sprint Jason Kenny
Men's team sprint Chris Hoy/Kenny (Philip Hindes)

As expected

Men's time trial Bradley Wiggins – gold
Women's team pursuit Danielle King, Laura Trott, Joanna Rowsell – gold
Men's team pursuit Ed Clancy, Steven Burke, Peter Kennaugh, Geraint Thomas (Andrew Tennant) – gold
Men's omnium Ed Clancy

Unexpected

Men's time trial - Chris Froome
Women's road race - Lizzie armistead
Women's Kirin - Victoria Pendleton

Worse than expected

Men's road race Mark Cavendish – gold
Women's time trial Emma Pooley
Women's team sprint Jess Varnish/Pendleton

Still to come

Women's omnium Laura Trott – gold
Men's keirin Chris Hoy – gold
Women's sprint Victoria Pendleton
Women's BMX Shanaze Reade

Idowu doesn't make the final. It was less hop, skip and jump, more plod, plod and plod. Just didn't look to have any spring or energy in his jumping :(

Liu Xiang fell over, Chinese co-commentator in tears, whole broadcast has been muted for a good half hour. Web comments a bit more cruel.

Just cut from the triathlon to say they had some very sad news. I thought someone had died, only for presenter to tell us about Idowu :D

Three cm shy of making the final. No other brit triple jumper could have got that close, so the argument (not one you're actually making) that he somehow 'let down' Team GB is a load of old bollocks

I think it's in the context of what he's capable of. His PB is 17.81, and he was 'supposed' to be challenging for medals. Whether he's let down Team GB or the fans or whatever is a slightly different argument, but I certainly think it's a disappointing performance.

and in the context of his big falling out with Van Commenee, the whole is he/isn't he fit and where is he staying etc

I feel for Phillips, i think he is gonna get shit for this. real shame.

If he wasn't really fit enough, would his place have gone to someone else? Why didn't he go to Portugal? Was he worried someone would see he wasn't fit and someone else could get his place?
