Athens Greece: Cops murder a 16 year old

Not having to pay public sector workers for a few days should save the Greek government a fair wedge. Every little helps.

They have fuck all to pay since they cut everyone's wages. Add to that all the overtime for the police and the tear gas bills then the savings will be minimal.

very very quickly some news, more detailed post tomorrow morning or late tonight.

A 48 hour general strike has been arranged for today and tomorrow, against the new austerity measures and this government. Today a demo had been organized that started from the Museum and National Polytechnic area and ended at the parliament square, which is taken over for 35 days now. The demo was not very big, I estimate about 20 thousand people, I assume that the most will be there tomorrow when the parliament will actually have to vote for the austerity measures.

A lot of trouble with the police started since 14:00 as they were continuously trying to take over the square completely and empty it from the protestors and the people gathered there. They managed to empty the square outside the parliament building and Amalias Avenue and push the people towards the big square, but the people on two different occasions managed to push the police lines back so Amalias square and the square outside the parliament are now again taken over. The police are pushed back to the stairs that lead to the building and to a nearby road. During all this period the police used loads of chemicals and stud grenades.

21 policemen injured
12 demonstrators injured
28 people detained
5 are arrested

One Riot Police officer outside the parliament as the riots were taking place decided to throw away his shield and his helmet and by shouting "FUCK OFF I HAVE HAD ENOUGH" moved to join the demonstrators. The other policemen were quick to stop him though and dragged him to the police bus.

A lot of Riot police (MAT) with brand new uniforms today, I assume that they have given MAT uniforms and to simple policemen (who do not belong to the riot police squad) for today and tomorrow, especially because they expect a lot of people tomorrow.

Greece for sale!

I reckon if we all had a whip round here we could afford a couple of banks and a sewage works thrown in for free

While Greece erupted in protest again yesterday, representatives of the country's government were at Claridge's hotel trying to drum up international investors' interest in a "fire sale" of its national assets.

Up for sale are 39 airports, 850 ports, railways, motorways, sewage works, a couple of energy companies, banks, defence groups, thousands of acres of land for development, casinos and Greece's national lottery. George Christodoulakis, Greece's special secretary for asset restructuring and privatisations, said the sell-off would raise €50bn (£44bn) to help pay back the country's €110bn bailout debt.

The private equity bosses gathered in the hotel's ballroom for the parade of Greece's national treasures showed little interest in buying anything.

nope. Its been on my laptop all night :D

Not sure what happened about 7ish. The plod fired a couple of tear gas canisters into the crowd in front of the parliament building. Everyone ran away until someone threw them at the plod and then everyone came back again. Gonna be an all nighter i hope :D

It looks like they're doing radio gaga now :)
I think we've got about an hour or so before the Anarkids turn up. Just enough time to get a bottle of Greek wine in from me main man 'Tony the Greek' who runs our BargainBooze and a kebab from the chippy next door.

Thanks for the updates Dimitris and stay safe brother

Hello
I know that I promised you a more detailed post, but I am really too tired to type. I have not slept, and I have breathing problems as we witnessed a chemical war against us during the whole day yesterday. Of course this is not stopping me and I will be at the square again today

Quite enough videos of yesterday here : http://athens.indymedia.org/front.php3?lang=el&article_id=1312874

JUNTA DID NOT FINISH ON 1973, JUNTA WILL FINISH IN PARLIAMENT SQUARE

48 HOURS IN THE STREETS.

Get in there Dimitris, good luck today. I see lots of people with gas masks on in the protests (where it's kicking off) maybe you need to invest in something like that to protect yourself against chemical warfare. Good luck mate, stay safe :)

Stay safe over there Dimitris.

Looks like more of those that previously said would vote against, are now going to vote for.

Mass teargassing - get the Maalox on!
