Athens Greece: Cops murder a 16 year old

Athens Indymedia is down for maintenance (it said earlier ) and now a pop up window comes up in the screen asking to log in and don't know exactly what is really happening and for how long it's going to be down- Dimitri if you know more about this let us know But from the radio I heard that "they started detaining people from Exarhia for no other reason other than being there" radio station : "sto kokkino".

from Occupied ESHEA's blog http://katalipsiesiea.blogspot.com/
About the arrests:
There was a demo in solidarity to the detained anarchist Yannis Dimitrakis and the police forces had surrounded the demo in a choking manner - again- and 2 arrests -again for precautionary reasons  - close to Victoria square . 2 more by the end -or at the end- of the demo at Propylaia. According to the blog the clashes are over now and most people have left.
From the radio again on their latest news they say about 2 arrests in Exarhia after the demo for no reason whatsoever quoting witnesses' accounts.

Hello from Exarchia, Athens.

There was a demo today in solidarity to Yannis Dimitrakis, an anarchist who is in prison and is going to pass from trial on the 9th of December. Not a very big demo, I estimate about 800 people, but with massively huge police presence. Police surrounded the demo at all its length, and extra police squads existed outside the Law Department and the Polytechnic building. On occasions they were even forming double lines on the side of the demo. Police also existed and on the corners of the alleys that lead to Exarchia, in order to prevent the demonstrators to reach the area. There were some prosecutions before the start of the demo, I think around 10, but I am not aware of any arrests.

After the end of the demo there were some minor clashes with the police outside the Law department of Athens University.

In Exarchia at least at the moment, everything is calm.

You get this window that asks you for password when you log in with the following url https://athens.indymedia.org If you use the normal one http://athens.indymedia.org no pop up window appears.

As they say there is a server update that is why there are problems. I also expect that within the next days traffic on indy website will increase therefore there may be accessibility problems.

Just been wandering around and the police are looking like fucking scum. Eyeballing us and behaving like neanderthals.

We left the UK in miserable rain and cold. Now we're in short sleeves in the sunshine.

Tis a hard life being an anarchist.

We've just had our first run in with filth. Got away by the skin of our teeth.

....not to mention a fair amount of blagging.

The streets around the polytechnic are tense and menacing.

OK guys and gals it's "official": We live in a police state in Greece...
cops of all kinds in all kinds of areas in Athens on swine feet or in all kinds of vehicles, motorbikes, vans, buses and helicopters have flooded the streets and the Athenian sky (in a "discreet and protective" manner) in an attempt to intimidate people from participating in the events for Alexandros and the Social Uprising... They are so f... mistaken, they have no clue...
Two incidents today one in Exarhia and one in Chalandri where they detained people, in Chalandri 16-year-olds... (the students in Chalandri have been released now)
(By the way more than 400 schools and universities have been occupied already by students)
Also the "monitoring" techniques include personal phones and computers.
This is what they mean by a democratic and free society...

They will have their answer on Sunday and Monday and everyday.

December 2008 did NOT finish, it continues and it will continue whenever and wherever the movement directs. They haven't seen nothing yet.

WE WILL FLOOD THE STREETS. THESE ARE OUR STREETS. THIS IS OUR CITY.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

as far as posts from me with detailed information from Indy or other sites, it has been impossible since lunchtime, I cannot open more than one page... and sometimes no page at all...

But any other info I will try to post whenever possible.

THESE ARE THE DAYS FOR ALEXIS, FOR ALL OF US, FOR THE SOCIAL UPRISING

NOTHING IS OVER

EVERYBODY OUT IN THE STREETS

6th of December We don't forget We don't forgive

Police are everywhere, completely everywhere. The whole city center is flooded by them. All night last night a helicopter was flying over Exarchia and over Zografou, at the center of Athens, very low over the buildings, making it impossible to sleep. On the media they say that on the helicopter they have monitoring equipment that they can track SMS messages and mobile phones, in order to get hold of mobile phone numbers of comrades.

A very big number of undercover police is also on the streets dressed in civilian clothes.

If you get stopped by the police, for a random check, just tell them your full name and give them appropriate ID (eg passport). Do not answer to any more questions and do not give out information of where you are going, or what you intend to do. Ask from the policeman his name and his police number, they are obliged to tell you.
If you get detained and transferred to the police station, DO NOT sign anything and do not give out any fingerprints. You will give fingerprints only if you are properly arrested, therefore there should be charges against you. Ask for a lawyer, and do not sign anything even if the lawyer tells you, you could alternatively tell the lawyer to sign himself.
Generally speaking there is no need for anyone to be scared or frightened. Just be cool and do not draw too much attention with your actions and movements.

No matter how many policemen are out there, WE ARE MORE THAN THEM. Everybody should flood the streets, give out the message that the streets are OURS, that this city is ours, not them.

THESE ARE THE DAYS OF ALEXIS

NOTHING IS OVER YET.

http://www.occupiedlondon.org/blog/...o-down-flesh-machine-ego-te-provoco-comrades/

as far as the latest the same, same tactics, cops in all kinds of areas, although not much at the moment in Exarhia, and still bloody helicopters in many parts of Athens. ... some people are going to be tired for Sunday :p

Same story in Thessaloniki where this year they are also concentrating on protecting their xmas tree there... I was just wondering these swines, not the many we see these days in plain clothes the other ones in their normal swine uniforms all shiny and all, are they going to be carrying their guns as well on the 6th like they are these days, in the general discreet and protective style employed lately?

* a link from yesterday when silly people were playing silly games with my computer, like the ones they play in OUR streets, now you see them, (next road) now you don't, now you see them... and then they'll see US!

They are preparing to install cameras at central points in Athens for live coverage
translation from Report - Denounce from television technicians

REPORT - DENOUNCE

According to absolutely confirmed information, at this point there is communication/ consultation of the last minute in the greek police (ΕΛ.ΑΣ.) in order to install "safely" and "discreetly" cameras at certain central points in Athens.

At the installation process there are going to be present high-ranking officers of the Security Services of the Police and they'll have by the authorities a free hand at every installation team so they can listen to everything transmitted first hand.

The high and mighty press mogul Makis Triantafilopoulos actually expressed his eagerness to offer from today two shifts of live coverage, without posting those in his website, just for the eyes of people of the greek police (ΕΛ.ΑΣ.)

Up to now these are the confirmed points of camera installations in Athens:

- office in a block of flats across the Athens Polytechnic (Patission street)
- office in a block of flats at the corner of the Athens Polytecnic (Patission and Stournari street)
- roof in a block of flats across the police station in Exarhia (Kallidromiou street)
- roof in a block of flats that looks out to Propylaia (from the side of the Law School)

We Denounce the cooperation of the police with television stations as well as the installation contractors, which aims at making every insurgent a target and turn into commodity the rage of free people. Cameras should target the police, the riots squads and the security & special forces of the police and not the demonstrators and the fighters of the movement!

We will update with information as soon as we confirm.

"137 | Thirteen people have been arrested at anarchist space in Athens; open assembly at the Polytechnic, 7pm tonight
19.18 Cops just stormed Exarcheia square, detaining about 20 people, without anything having happened before. There are also riot cops ready to kick off on the corner of Messologiou and Metaxa Street, literally a few meters away from the point of Alexis’ assassination. Polytechnic assembly is starting soon.

Riot police have stormed the anarchist space Resalto in Western Athens. They smashed the building’s glass facade and arrested thirteen people, driving them all to the Police Headquarters in Alexandras Avenue.

For all the internationals who have made their way to Athens:

1) Welcome!

2) Never, ever wander around the city without ID. If they stop you, police can, and will, detain you and drive you to their HQ to confirm your identity.

3) If things go wrong: The legal defense group can be reached on these numbers: 6972-718536
6972-799025

6978-909319
6936-492025
6975-752346
6973-335960

4) An open assembly is starting at the Polytechnic at 7pm tonight. Come there to get more information about what will be happening in the next few days.

Some of our international friends who are already in Athens have put together the following list of “do’s and dont’s”:

do not:
have any patches on clothing or bags (political or band)
carry any form of political agit prop, including stickers on wallets or antifascist donor cards
don’t keep clothes in zip lock bags till you have to
go of the beaten track in any area that is regarded as “political” unless you mean to and know exactly where you’re going.
chat in english about your favourite riot porn or the latest post on occupied london

do:
DRESS LIKE A TOURIST: anarcho-chic is not going to make you any friends
have your passport on you if you’re just out for a walk in town, you can get in to more trouble without it.

from the Television Technicians 2nd update

"... all the installation teams will have - after the insistent demands of the police - super-directional microphones (shotgun or boom) with which they're going to be able to record and transmit sounds from quite far...
at this moment the press moguls of television are negotiating with the police if their transmissions will have time-lapse and for how long... The intention is, in other words, to cut on the spot images of police brutality although the coverage from the cameras is going to be live. If there's going to be time lapse no one will ever see those images...
We denounce all the negotiations/ cooperation between the police and the television managers as well as the installation contractors who are being escorted by security service's officers in their search for "safe" and central points to install their equipment...
after our first denounce there have been many threatening calls to technicians on shift and many "friendly" chats at working places...
They are mistaken if they think we are on the side of oppotunists and exploiters... we will continue with updates... beware "

except for the 20 detainments from the squat at Keratsini (Resalto, post on occupied london as well) there have been 50 or more detainments of which at least 12 are arrests at different areas of central Athens

cops of all kinds all around Exarhia

* from mainstream media (tv): 10.000 cops of all kinds there are going to be tomorrow in Athens

** from tvxs.gr : all the streets from Akadimias street onwards are blocked also from Charilaou Trikoupi street onwards . 74 the detainments of which 12 are arrests. Occupation of the town hall in Keratsini in solidarity to the arrests from Resalto, the town hall now surrounded by police forces.

* from mainstream media (newspaper) : there is information from police sources that what happened at Resalto ( the squat at Keratsini) will be repeated at other similar places

*** indymedia has access problems. for any greeks on urban try alternative sites

a few legal facts about the demos (from http://www.tvxs.gr/v1974 )
- it is illegal to search demonstrators, ask for their identity papers or photograph them/ all of which happened at the last demo for the Polytechnic . Cameras are also illegal and that's why the greek police has even payed fines in the past after charges from the Independent Authority of Protection of Personal Information / cameras are installed already with the involvement of police

- the police base their right to carry fire arms on a law of 1943 ! Many judges and lawyers have stated that this law is unconstitutional and out-of-date but for 60 + years no government has done anything in the direction of abolishing it.

thanks as always both :) stay safe

finally something on the bbc

Athens set for anniversary of fatal police shooting
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8396693.stm
bbc said:
The teenager's death at the hands of police in December last year sparked Greece's worst riots in decades.

In the run-up to the anniversary, dozens of schools and university campuses have been occupied by students preparing to mark the uprising.

Greece's government says it will have a zero tolerance policy towards violence.

"We want to send a clear message, we won't tolerate a repeat of the violence and terror scene in central Athens, we won't hand Athens to vandals," said Citizen Protection Minister Mihalis Chrysohoidis.

Memorial service

Family and friends of teenager Alexandros Grigoropoulos will hold a memorial service on Sunday to mark a year since his killing.

They have appealed for calm, but posters have appeared in the capital saying: "We won't forget, we won't forgive."

Police said they expect about 150 foreign anarchists to arrive this weekend from Italy, France and other European countries.

Very quick update, no time for links etc.

There was tension earlier at Exarchia and the Polytechnic area as Stella mentioned. Some people got detained and got arrested.

ALSO, police raid in an anarchist squat (RESALTO) at Keratsini, near Pireaus (the port of Athens) detaining a number of comrades. In a spontanious reaction, comrades started a demo at the streets of Keratsini, and managed to take over the Town Hall building of Keratsini. The mayor permitted to the police to enter the building, so all the comrades that had taken over the building are now arrested.

We're still in the polytechnic surrounded by the filth.

We've heard nine Italians were arrested earlier today around here.

75 are the arrests from yesterday in Athens, to the initial 12 from Exarhia 22 more from the anarchist squat in Keratsini and lastly the 41 from the town hall of Keratsini after the police entered the building that the mayor and the prosecutor present allowed although the people inside were willing to exit peacefully .
info mostly from occupied ESIA http://katalipsiesiea.blogspot.com/
Now tvxs.gr is not allowing access it reached max capacity, and indy as before many problems for access let alone for posting.

Until just a while ago a big group in solidarity to the arrested outside the GADA (police headquarters)

75 arrests ......

They believe that with these tactics they will discourage people and that they will not be on the demo tomorrow.

NOTHING IS STOPPING US. EVERYBODY ON THE STREETS

THESE ARE THE DAYS OF ALEXIS.

Attack against the Police Station of Zografou, close to the center of Athens, just half an hour ago. A few petrol bombs were thrown against the building, no real damages took place.

Within the 75 arrested, 5 people are Italian and 3 are Albanian.

Approximately 150-160 people have been detained as a means of terrorisation whilst also preventing and deterring others from participating in demonstrations marking the anniversary of the murder of a 15 year old youth in Athens. As a result the Polytechnic University of Athens has been Occupied and actions called.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE OCCUPATION OF THE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF ATHENS.

Approximately 150-160 people have been detained as a means of terrorisation whilst also preventing and deterring others from participating in demonstrations marking the anniversary of the murder of a 15 year old youth in Athens.

A year after the murder of Alexandros Grigoropolous by the Greek state, the regime enforcing army are attempting to seize every corner of the city.

The uniformed murderers have invaded the social centre, “Resalto”, in Keratsini. They attacked youths and have blockaded all entrances and exits to places of social and political struggle. They have surrounded Exarhia and the Polytechnic, and continue to make large numbers of arrests and detainments.

The puppets of the regime, the media, are transmitting state propaganda and as a result are creating an atmosphere and terror.
One year after the social upheaval of December 2008, the system of oppression and exploitation is once again attempting to re-assert its authority. The Government are attempting to enforce a state of emergency in order to drown out social utrage and enforce the silence of a cemetery on society.

Due to the seizure of the city we are occupying the Polytechnic university.

We are calling every person who wants to resist to do so by any means possible.

We will keep the space, and are showing solidarity with all those who face state persecution.

We demand the immediate release of all those arrested and detained.

EVERYONE ON THE STREETS TOMORROW (SUNDAY) AT 13.30pm, PROPYLEA

WE DON’T FORGET

WE DON’T FORGIVE

EVERYTHING CONTINUES

" Tonight, Democracy took 162 prisoners. Tomorrow is our day: Demonstrations in twenty cities across the country
One-hundred and sixty-two people tried the sweet taste of democracy today, having being arrested, detained, dragged to police stations, humiliated, charged. The message is becoming crystal-clear: democracy takes no chances, it only takes prisoners. Democracy smashes into the spaces that annoy it to the slightest; it only democracy to invert history: the assassins become the victims, the victims become the villains.

But tomorrow is our day. Demonstrations have been called for in cities across the country (Mytilene, Heraklion, Larisa, Sparta, Agrinio, Thessaloniki, Kilkis, Corfu, Xanthi, Samos, Athens, Rhodes, Lamia, Serres, Volos, Giannena, Patras, Arta, Corinth, Kardisa).

In Athens, the main demonstration has been called for at 13.30 pm at Propylea. Live reports will be posted here. "
