Apple TV+ recommendations?

Just read about a new series on Apple that sounds good.

"If you're looking for the plot that's the surest to suck people in, you could do worse than centering on a contest. Be it Rocky, Pitch Perfect or Squid Game, such stories possess a built-in suspense and drama. They make us ask, "Who's going to win?"

This question comes luxuriously bottled in Drops of God, a pleasurable new Apple TV+ mini-series about a contest set in the world of upmarket wine with its connoisseur vintages, voluminous snobberies and undercurrents of business chicanery. Although the basic idea is taken from a hit Japanese manga, the show is a French-made production that changes the story in huge ways. Where this comic ran a seemingly endless 44 volumes, the series clocks in at eight episodes and — amazingly — it actually ends there. More importantly, the series changes the lead character from a Japanese man to a French woman..."

Calling ATOMIC SUPLEX tagging you because I know you love all things Japanese, don't know if you have Apple TV though.

Just discovered Drops of God and really enjoying the first episode. I certainly wasn’t expecting it to be a Franco-Japanese TV adaptation of a Manga series about wine- instant points awarded for as intriguing and original setup as they come.

Shippou-Sensei , are you acquainted with the manga series? Google seems to suggest they are widely acclaimed.

Not seen that one specifically. I gave itva quick Google. However it doesn't surprise me. The are a lot of popular manga for older audiences based around adult acceptable hobbies such as fine dining, golf, or wine tasting.

Interesting. Though based on a few hints half way through the second episode, I’m starting to suspect this might be more than just wine tasting and there might be some fucked up plot revelations ahead.

Most likely.

Will probably ramp up after a while too.

Manga is normally serialised monthly in giant collections of stories.
An author will come up with a premise and some key plot stuff but the story will last as long as it is popular.
I'm going to guess it starts off monster of the week but for wine but after a while adds more wierd stuff to keep the plot going.
Rival wine tasters. A wine tasting tournament. A whole side track on food pairings. Having to uses wine tasting skills to help out a struggling vinter. And so on and so forth.

These are just wild speculations.
Might also be office politics stuff or dating stuff as this is aimed at an older audience who are trapped as corporate drones longing for an interesting personal life and some romance. (Massive oversimplification and exaggeration on that market)

Enjoying Silo, but kind of wishing I hadn’t read the book so I didn’t know what was coming
Good cast. Also, spot the nepo babies!

RE This weeks Ted Lasso.

I think Roy Kent is one of the best fictional character out there, really well written, and well acted by Brett Goldstein
Not sure about his voice but I’m used to hearing his natural voice.
I’m glad this is the last season. It does seem to have lost its way a bit and the cheesy bits that were initially charming have developed mould and now grate a little bit - such as those moments when a character looks upon a scene of harmony or cheer and smirks - I’m looking at you Trent Crimm

Having skimmed through this I notice he gets his rival straight away and is doing wine tasting tournaments.

I also read the second series of this is going to be all about food pairings.

It also hits the dramatic food reaction tick box

Still: A Michael J Fox Movie. A really good, compelling and moving feature length documentary about his life and struggles with Parkinson’s Disease.

Fantastic. Certainly a massive recommendation if you remotely like the guy. And let’s face it, you’d have to be a massive wrong’un if you don’t. So watch it.

Nice penultimate episode of Ted Lasso today, setting everything up nicely for the finale. And an amusing cameo to boot.

Really enjoyed Ted Lasso’s finale. A fitting conclusion and the right time to wrap it up.

Feel-good stuff is usually not my go-to comedy subgenre. Quite the contrary in fact, and most other efforts turn out to be pure cringe. But against all odds this show managed to pull it off. Perhaps if the first season hadn’t premiered in the middle of an unprecedented and devastating worldwide Pandemic, it would not have been nearly as popular.

I wonder if next season will be
more about the woman's team.

I started bad sisters at the weekend. It's good.
I have a friend who is English and lives in Dublin with his female partner who has four sisters. And they all like sea swimming.

Freaked him out when i alerted him to the plot of Bad Sisters

Anyone seen High Desert? Looks interesting - stars Patricia Arquette as a drug addict/dealer who becomes a private investigator. Made by the team who did Grace & Frankie and Get Shorty and directed by Jay Roach (Meet The Fockers/Austin Powers director), so I guess it’s a comedy

It’s reasonably watchable without being great in our view. About 6/10.

I binged The Morning Show this weekend and thought it was excellent. Everything you say above.

It's big and very American and takes itself a little too seriously in places but the good stuff outweighed that for me.
I don't have apple TV so I've just slsked this, absolutely delighted with it. Needed a decent American drama as I'd torn through all the good ones on Netflix. The very bigness of American stuff is great!

Also Holly Willoughby did indeed copy Jen's speech in the first episode. I wonder whether it was actually a pisstake, it was that similar.

I've just started the second series of The Morning Show.

Thought the first was excellent. Not feeling it as much in the second so far, but still keeping me there.

Starting the near-future climate change disaster anthology series Extrapolations. I had noticed before but thought it was a documentary rather than fiction.

It seems to have pretty mixed and overall lukewarm reviews, but looks well produced and boasts a fairly decent ensemble of acting talent throughout the series. Will report if worth watching imvho.

Ooh! Black Bird is fucking ace, don't see that getting a mention.

Taron Egerton is fucking excellent. Again.
We’ve only just started this, and only because Apple started auto playing the trailer because sure as hell we’d never heard of it.

Fucking loving it so far, really really good. It certainly deserves to be better known. And yes, Egerton is amazingly good. Fantastic actor. Amazing true story behind it as well. Talk about balls of steel

Massive recommendation to anyone with an Apple+ subscription

We've started The Big Door Prize with Chris O'Dowd. It's a very promising philosophical premise and I really, really, really hope it continues to be interesting.

I've not watched anything poor yet on
Apple+ so I have high hopes. Please do not disappoint!
