Apple TV+ recommendations?

dessiato

🇪🇸 my spirit is crying for leaving
I’ve just got a year’s free subscription for buying an iPad.

Is there much good on it?

So far I’ve started Dickinson which is about Emily Dickinson. It’s a bit odd. It uses a lot of modern language in a costume drama type setting. It sort of works, at least in episode 1.

Is there anything else worth the effort?

Sounds awful
Apple TV drops 'violent' Dr Dre drama, amid censorship complaints

The one about man on the Moon is supposed to be alright though.

I’ve seen absolutely atrocious reviews for The Morning Show despite its strong billing.

However, there is a show coming soon (or perhaps it is on already) that looks the dog’s bollocks, and I might have to get a subscription to watch it. The trailer is very promising...

I’ll look for it

I've been binge watching The Morning Show this week and it's brilliant. Well-written, well-paced, well-acted.

Jennifer Aniston is actually really good in it. I'd have thought Reese Witherspoon would do the acting equivalent of drink her under the table, but nope, she's holding her own. They're both extremely good.

And Cory the TV executive is hilarious. He's mischievously and quick-fire calculatingly lighting blue touch paper all over the place and waiting for things to go off, or gleefully watching the shit hit the fan and other people implode. His lines spoken by someone else would make them a heartless bastard and deeply unpleasant, but the fun he's having is kind of infectious and you get the sense that while he's a Grade A arsehole he has some redeeming qualities.

And some of the conversations Mitch is having about #MeToo stuff are really well-done too in a thought-provoking way. What's flirting, what's sexual misconduct? What's consensual and what's not when you take imbalance of power into account? Some grey areas/different people's perceptions sensitively handled.

I'll have a look. It sounds tempting.

I’ve watched the first of five episodes of Visible: Out on TV, a documentary series about LGBT representation on TV over the decades. It uses television as a mirror for social change and a civil rights movement for which the 50s were pretty much the dark ages. Obviously it’s from a US perspective but it’s excellent.

I've been planning to watch that. Having a transgender sister I've become much more interested in learning more so as to able to help and support her better.

I've just finished watching Ted Lasso, a sit-com about an American football coach being hired to manage a Premier League football team. It's completely illiterate about football, but after a rocky couple of opening episodes it really comes into its own and ends up being one of my favourite shows of the year. It's got real heart and wholesomeness, and is carried by a great performance from Jason Sudeikis playing Ted.

My free subscription has been extended until July. I've not used it, is there anything good on there at all? The fact they're extending the free subscription doesn't seem to be a particularly good sign that there's anything worth watching.

For All Mankind - interesting premise, I can't remember why I stopped watching but I did
Defending Jacob - been done before, could have been a ripping yarn but the casting of the parents and the lack of subtleties in the plot let it down
Tehran - could be worth trying but doesn't look anything special
Servant - apparently Stephen King likes it, might give it a go tonight actually, there's nothing else on.

Ah, I'm also remembering - my tv doesn't have the AppleTV app on it. So it's all just a little bit harder. Thanks for the recommendations though, may give them a go.

Greyhound is good if you like war naval stuff.

This came across to me as a 90s style made for TV movie. It just went from one battle to the next without any focus on the effect it was having in the crew.

On the rocks which has bill Murray in it is alright.

That’s about all I’ve watched on it in 12 months. Free trial ends in feb (it got extended also so god knows if they will extend it again as been as I got a new iPhone as well during that period!) otherwise I won’t be renewing.

Mine's been extended by another 3 months, the 2nd time it's been extended. So defiantly don't be tempted to cancel those free trials too close before they expire!

Not that I will probably watch anything on it!

That's my problem. I've only found one thing to watch, Dickenson, which I really enjoyed. Otherwise I find Prime and Netflix enough.

I think I've watched one film between each trail, I don't know if they just blanket extend everyone, or you needed to have at least watched something, so I'll probably try and find something to watch just in case, even if it goes on as background. platinumsage did you stick with Servant?

I’ve only watched one thing (on the rocks) and mine has been extended too.
Keep meaning to watch the Beastie Boys film but haven’t got round to it yet.

How does this free subscription thing work? My wife bought an iPad and was told she would automatically get free apple TV for three months for her and her family.
iPad is registered but if she goes to Apple TV. . . Nothing.
And how would I sign into use it? I can't see anywhere to sign into an account like on prime or Netflix.

I just signed in using my Apple ID in the settings menu.

How to get Apple TV+
  1. Make sure that you have an Apple device, smart TV, streaming device, or AirPlay-enabled TV that's compatible with the Apple TV app. If you're using an Apple device, make sure that it has latest version of iOS or iPadOS, macOS, or tvOS.
  2. On your compatible device, open the Apple TV app. If you're using an eligible Apple device, you might see a message to redeem your Apple TV+ promotion.
  3. Go to Watch Now, scroll down to the channels section, then select Apple TV+.
  4. Tap or click the trial offer (one trial per person or family).2
  5. Sign in with the Apple ID and password that you use to make purchases. If you donʼt have an Apple ID, choose Create New Apple ID, then follow the steps to create one.3
  6. If asked, confirm your billing information and add a valid payment method. Then choose Confirm. If prompted, agree to the terms and conditions.
If you forgot your Apple ID, see how you can find it.

OK so this doesn't answer my question.
2. The eligible apple device is not asking to redeem the three month Apple TV promotion she is supposed to have.

Also how do you share with family on other devices? I can't log in with my wife's Apple ID on my Macs.

I think the ‘for her and her family’ thing is a lie unless you’re already set up for family sharing.

The psychological thriller/horror show Servant has been getting good reviews.

I've been watching Servant. It's quite strange but I'm enjoying it.
Toby Kebbell was excellent in Dead Man's Shoes. Worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

Really loved Ted Lasso - it’s perfect for these troubled times. A series with some nice people in it who you root for. Even the dislikable characters have their reasons for behaving the way they do.
it’s got such a great ensemble cast and they’re given such great words to say. Funny and more moving than I want to ever give a comedy about an American Football coach taking charge of a London Premiere League team
