Apple is betting the farm on a VR headset

Playing with your kids while wearing a massive pair of goggles was a bit weird but hey if anyone can normalise this sort of thing it's probably Apple.

All the expected compromises are there, and possibly a bit worse than expected.

Nothing even vaguely close to an obvious killer app either, they are going to need to offer developers stuff that some can build interesting things with in order for this thing to stand a chance. Had to resort to some dreaming from Disney today that was not very exciting.

I'd like to experience for myself how good the screen is, but other than that I'm not even sad that its launching late and only in the US to start with.

I'll still have to watch the right parts of the dev conference to see what is available to devs in version 1. None of the half-baked ideas I've got can be done until apps and visual overlays can be properly locked to specific real world objects and locations accurately and in a persistent fashion. Even if I could decorate my real world room with apps and widgets that properly stay in place that would be a start, but I saw few signs of that in their demos today - this stuff currently looks to exist only on the most basic level.

Not hard to see why there was talk of internal misgivings about it. If the platform takes off eventually its going to take years, and thats the only reason I wont predict its doom at this stage. Far from ripe.

I wonder how many rich early adopters there will be. It's a lot of money to spend on something that probably won't be that useful for a couple of generations.

There's an article in the papers about some guy selling fish and chips for £35 where you get 8 chips.

In other news, I doubt even less can afford a £3.5k AR headset.

First thing they showed was a bunch of app icons. So it's like gluing an iPhone to your face?

Needs extra inserts if you don't have 20:20 vision further reducing the people who can let alone want to use it.

Being Apple I'm sure it'll work great and integrate well with all other Apple stuff but why would anyone get it?

What is point? 🤔

I only really want a decent-ish headset for flight simulator. With a hefty enough pc to run it. But not a £6k PC and not a £3.5k headset.
I’d get the piss ripped by almost everyone if I spent £3.5k to have maps strapped to my face. And rightly so.

You can basically do everything you do now - work, movies, games, talk to your friends and family - but with a ski mask strapped to your face.
It's quite a depressing thought that people would wear them the whole time.
And doing a zoom call but instead of showing your face people see an avatar version of you... That's better?!

It’s a solid start on the AR and VR imo.

Obvs it’ll need to develop over time to get better but then so did the iPhone. I really liked the design focus on lightweight materials, and also the face scan things to have a video call while wearing the headset and let the other person see your AI generated face.

Haven’t read the thread so apologies if it has been mentioned aplenty already, but even though that Google Glass eyewear was an abject failure, there clearly was no noticeable harm done to the company, other than some bruised egos perhaps. If this bombs I doubt Apple would be in any kind of trouble for it.

Still, to a cynical old dog like me it still feels like a massively uninteresting and pointless pile of wank, just like so many other big tech launches, from Amazon’s wanky spy speaker to that new Meta virtual world bullshit I neither care nor understand the point of.

ETA: like so many other new audiovisual inventions of the last few decades, I wouldn’t be surprised if the porn industry turns out to be the one industry where this device flourishes.

Might be good if used to develop VR. But don’t imagine anyone would want to do that on the move and presumably you’d need a shuttle strapped to your back to to ruun the thing for longer than ten minutes.

People sit in offices with noise cancelling headphones on, so why not one of these I guess. Lots of focus on productivity and multitasking.

Did not work out well for meta and they actually have a functioning platform and community, plus a headset that doesn't cost 4 times more than my car.

Meta's "community" (lol) are the product. They're not paying customers.
Apple has sold over 2.3 billion iPhones.

AR is pretty cool. And VR even cooler, I mean when it's done well it's incredible. I'd like to try one of these. But won't be an early adopter. 3.5k isn't bad though, but you'd want your company to be forking out for that. The price of the new Mac Pros is the more bonkers one.

Both Radio 4 and the World Service talking about this on the morning news as I drove to work. Both massively missing the point. I mean I'm not sure there is one yet, but you aren't buying one just to send a message or look at your holiday snaps.

I can see film nuts getting it for the vision pro. That looks incredible.
