Another Sainsbury's on Brixton Hill???

Portuguese family run cafe with shop.
They sell nice bread, pastries, fruit, veg, some nice cooking bits and a few beers.

Really friendly and pretty cheap. It is an odd little place, kind of their front room in the evenings. The couple that run it cook a big meal and serve it to the people in the shop from a big pan :)

It's always looked a bit intimate, which is why I've not gone in to have a nosey. But bread and pastries are good. Take away coffee?

It is a bit intimate but they are very friendly. Don't know about the coffee but guessing nothing too special. I had a cup in there one snow day but never really asked. More limited but less shite service/food than the two other shops on that row. The pastries are excellent ;)

The veg are very good in Nunes (Certainly compared to the other shops on that stretch)... and the bread is that very thick Portuguese bread.. they also do corn bread. Nice pasteis de nata and good olive oil. They're also v. friendly. Don't drink coffee so can't answer that question.. will ask gaijinboy - he's the coffee addict.

eta.. they also do a v. nice tortilla espanola - even better in one of their rolls - but naughty..

The bloke who owns (or part owns) the Quick Stop and the Costcutter is my next door neighbour. I was talking to one of his tenants at the weekend (he split it into rooms to rent and a flat for himself) and they've all been told they have to be out by the end of the month because he's selling up. The Mrs bumped into him a couple of weeks ago and apparently said the shops have been struggling for a while, so it would seem this is the last straw. Will ask what the score is next time I see him.

That's a shame. He's only had Costcutter for a while hasn't he?

Where did John from Costcutter go anyway?

Is he the one who looks like Ted Danson? I like him.

If Ted Danson looks like a stocky forty somthing Mancunian Pakistani shopkeeper from Karachi, then yes.
I must admit I've been using Costcutter less since the guy with the Man United hat started working there. Nothing personal but CTID.
The young guy in the shop next to Blenheim Gardens supports Arsenal which has been good for a many LOL recently.

This is horrible news and the last thing the area needs. How many tesco/sainsbury's stores do we need in a 1mile radius! I know the council can't let valuable space go to waste but there has to be some thought for the local shop keepers. Nisa and co and great for bits and bobs but Brixton Market is the real gem. The peoples supermarket for everything else! Do not want to see Brixton turn into Balham :(

I think maybe you are too late.....The PR Brixton is getting at the moment is massive. Noticed there is a two page spread on Brixton, in the asperational Addison lee magazine.

Yeah, it's been ok for taxis to come to Brixton for quite a while now:D

I looked inside that carpet place for the first time ever; it's quite a big store. Seems bigger than the usual Sainsburys Local thing.

I got my first carpet from there. Can't remember what it was called at the time. This was 1985. Anyone remember?

Dunno.
But I got a overstock carpet from there over xmas.
pretty good as it was cheaper than all the other chains.

I miss living around Brixton/ Streatham Hill.

Is that guy still hanging around the traffic lights on the junction?
Has anyone seen the Chinese guy drinking coffee next to that place near the Whitehorse?

The black guy with muscular body.
Hides a can of cider in the bushes. I think someone wrote here once that he use to be footie player but later it was uncovered that that's all bull.
He sometimes is seen running with the traffic on Brixton Hill while dangling his cock.
Yeah,I saw him in Brixton centre now and then.

You realise you're talking about a guy way up the top of the Hill, not the middle part of the Hill?
