Another Sainsbury's on Brixton Hill???

Who the fuck does their weekly shop in Kensington if you live in Brixton?

I think she means Kennington/Vauxhall. I've been to that one (when I was flatsitting in Kennington) There's Figgs Marsh Asda and Colliers Wood Sainsbury too but I'm not likely to pick up any clothes bargains there while I'm picking up my weekly shop, but I'm not going to make a special trip just to see what they've got either.

I chose Kensington cos the Tesco there is amazing and I drive/drove past it. You could go to OKR or Brixton if you prefer but they're both pretty shit.

nah the Kennington Tesco if 'ok' but it's not very big. Where is Figgs Marsh? For Asda I'd go Clapham Junction/OKR :hmm:

I also don't drive.

I wouldn't go anywhere 'for' Asda or any of them. The only reason to go to a supermarket is because it's more convenient than other options.

I'm not counting M&S as a supermarket for the purposes of this argument...

Because otherwise my post sounds like I self-righteously only do my shopping in independent bakers etc, carrying a basket which I then put on the front of my vintage pushbike and stop on the way home to pick daisies.

I see

Nothing wrong with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

I don't buy my olive oil in supermarkets, anyway. I get fair trade stuff direct from Palestinian producers. *sniffs*

Is there nowhere in Brixton Village that sells it?

Balsamic vinegar is soooooooooooooooooo middle class.

This is pretty close to us, seven minutes walk according to TFL. Have to say we don't use any of the shops there as we are nearer to the Tulse Hill 'parade' of shops.

No doubt the shops on Brixton Hill will be hit the hardest but it seems there are also too many small shops on Tulse Hill all selling the same stuff. Not much of which is good quality or priced to compete with a Sainsbury's.

Do not like to see supermarkets multiplying in Brixton but there is also no need for two carpet shops 5 minutes apart. Guess this is reflected by Allied Carpets closing down. Although how Carpet Right on the corner of Tulse Hill keeps going is beyond me, nobody seems to go in there. That Allied Carpets premises is pretty big for a street a little way out of the town, can't think what else would go in there?

As people have said the Brixton Sainsbury's by the station is pretty poor in choice and irritatingly packed. It won't close though and this new one will mean we have three Sainsbury's within about 10 minutes walk from our door.

The one shop that will always get my loyal custom is Nune's at 19 Tulse Hill which is great for price and quality.

Hi everyone

I'm aghast that there could be scope for another one - after all 10 mins walk up OR down the hill = SAINSBURY'S

SB

There's another Sainsbury Local approx 10 mins walk from the one on Brixton Hill at the top end of Streatham Hill.

Amazing how many stores they open in such short distance.

And further along, a Tescos, Morrisons and a Sainsburys.

More and more of the same.
And none of them do alcoholic Root Beer.

Can I object anyway? Not suggesting a Tesco/Stokes Croft thing, but surely they need planning permission?

I'm not sure if they need planning permission because it's not a change of use. I could well be wrong about this, but I know Tesco were able to turn a pub near me into a supermarket because that isn't classed as change of use either.

Sainsbury's Superstore - 480 Streatham High Road
Sainsbury's Local - 172-176 Streatham High Road
Sainsbury's Local - 47a Streatham Hill
Sainsbury'sLocal - 266 Brixton Hill
Sainsbury's Local - 76 Brixton Hill (new store)
Sainsbury's - 425 Brixton Road

Tesco - 386 Streatham High Road (proposed new store where Streatham Ice Rink was)
Tesco Express/Metro - 42-50 Streatham High Road
Tesco Express/Metro - 30 Streatham Place
Tesco Superstore - Acre Lane
Tesco Express/Metro - 330 Brixton Road
Tesco (near Vassal Road) - proposed development
Tesco (Business Park) - proposed development

Morrison's - Streatham High Road
Co-op - Streatham High Road
Lidl - Streatham High Road
Marks & Spencer - Brixton Road

So, according to Google maps, Streatham Common to the end of Brixton Road (near Kennington Park) is 4.8 miles. This, going by the most direct route is a 13 minute drive according to Google maps. Obviously that's assuming you don't get stuck in Streatham High Road or anywhere else!

Can someone supply me with the details of the proposed new stores past Brixton Road, Sainsbury's and I'll add them to the list? Suppose I could put stores in Clapham Common area in the list as well, or maybe just anything within a radius of 5 miles? Or shall I just stick to the A23 (despite adding the Tesco's in Streatham Place and Acre Lane in as they are almost on the A23)

That's right I think - actually I think pubs might be different but retail to retail doesn't need new planning permission.

So, according to Google maps, Streatham Common to the Brixton Sainsbury's is about 3.3 miles.

I thought it was tesco's doing the ice rink? Wasn't that what all the fuss has been about?

They'll want a booze licence though which could be objected to as there are FOUR 24 booze places within two blocks which is frankly a bit stupid anyway.

FIVE if you count Kwik Stop or whatever it's called

Never stopped the one next to Blenheim Gardens getting a licence

No it's 4; High Times or whatever it's called isn't 24 hours afaik.

That shop by Blenheim Gardens is hilarious...Mr Phone Man!!!

High Spirits?

Fuck's sake. He might as well just glue that phone to his ear eh?!

Maybe he likes to get his money worth of free minutes

Ice rink is Tescos?
That's cool - saves me that extra 3 minute walk to Morrisons.

Just want them to re-open the leisure centre.

What do they sell? I've recently moved nearby.

Portuguese family run cafe with shop.
They sell nice bread, pastries, fruit, veg, some nice cooking bits and a few beers.

Really friendly and pretty cheap. It is an odd little place, kind of their front room in the evenings. The couple that run it cook a big meal and serve it to the people in the shop from a big pan :)
