Another Sainsbury's on Brixton Hill???

sparkybird

ask the bird...
Hi everyone

Mr Sparkybird was told in the Nisa shop today that Allied Carpets is closing and Sainsbury's opening in it's place.

Has anyone else heard this?

I'm aghast that there could be scope for another one - after all 10 mins walk up OR down the hill = SAINSBURY'S

Surely it will hit the smaller shops on this stretch quite hard.

Can I object anyway? Not suggesting a Tesco/Stokes Croft thing, but surely they need planning permission? Will residents be consulted?

It was discussed on these boards last week. It is happening

I asked in Allied Carpets yesterday and they said the Sainsbury shopfitting would start some time next month

I guess it will be bad for the small shops which, as they go, are quite well equipped, and very friendly

I'd be even more sympathetic if Nisa didn't 'maintain' such an eyesore storage unit next door

Yeah, does let the Hill down a bit. Why don't you tell 'em to put some blinds up?!

I reckon Nisa and Costcutter will survive though, NISA anyway, as they do bus passes and are right next to bus stop. Costcutters has been there for well over 20 years and has loyal customers, although since John left, I'm not sure if they'd stay loyal. Is right next door to the White Horse as well so I reckon that helps with people doing their shopping there after the pub, although they'd probably use the Sainsbury's if it's their direction home.

House of Bottles may have a problem. One on the corner of Blenheim Gardens may have a problem as well.

Maybe they'll all survive. I hope so

Someone I know had a theory that they kept that unit so that some competition wouldn't open next door.

And, Minnie, its High Spirits not HoB on the other side of the road. I think the one next to Blenheim Gardens will be alright. People are lazy and don;t walk far and they actually have the best selection of soft drinks on the hill.

Shit, knew it was something to do with alcohol! House of Bottles is Coldharbour Lane isn't it!

The unit next to them though is the old Post Office so as they're now the Post Office, maybe erm...

Speedy replies, thanks! That'll learn me for never looking in the chitter chatter thread, eh?

Haven't walked down that way for a little while - things move fast around here.

I'll still be using Nisa, except for things that I would normally get in Sainsbury's (which TBH is just pine nuts!) I have to say that the Brixton one is carp - can never find what I'm looking for - who choses the stock in there?

Perhaps I'll mention to the Nisa guys that a few blinds in the old Post Office would go a whole way in helping to preserve customer loyalty!!

The store that will struggle is the red-awninged Kwik Stop corner shop.

It's just one along from Allied Carpets, on the same small block.

The new Sainsbury may be quite big, larger than those at the Tube station and at the top of the hill

That's because the carpet store is cavernous, with at least one storage area off the main floor.

Yeah, meant to mention that one as being one that might have some difficulty but was too busy getting the name of High Spirits wrong

You are right, I should.

Ocado is just as cheap for cupboard basics and I find them more reliable than Tesco and have had far fewer substitutions. They nearly always turn up early as well (but only after ringing to check it's ok), and they're always smiling after carrying the shopping up four flights of stairs (even if I do help them)

That's actually not too bad for me; it'd save me having to get off at Brixton tube for food and walk all the way down with heavy shopping from M&S...
Mind you I am back on the saddle so it's cool.

That allied carpet place is an eyesore - plus, there's another carpet shop down at the end of Josephine Avenue/Effra Rd!

So are carpet showrooms normally attractive? :hmm:

You walk all the way down from M&S? :hmm:

This is horrible news and the last thing the area needs. How many tesco/sainsbury's stores do we need in a 1mile radius! I know the council can't let valuable space go to waste but there has to be some thought for the local shop keepers. Nisa and co and great for bits and bobs but Brixton Market is the real gem. The peoples supermarket for everything else! Do not want to see Brixton turn into Balham :(

are they?

I don't know, I'm asking you. A carpet showroom has been there for decades and this is the first time I've heard anyone moan about it being an eyesore. This isn't Knightsbridge/Richmond/any other nice, trim, little area :D

yeah I have done, but on the bike is alright :)

Do you live on Brixton Hill? :hmm:

They're our local shop. I'm sad to hear that sainburys are moving in but reckon they have a loyal fan base. In any case they are the same people as Costcutter.

I won't be using the sainburys.

He's got amazing eyes that one in the corner shop

I wouldn't mind quite so much if it at least was a different supermarket.

Maybe it will be large enough for a whole olive oil and balsamic vinegar section like the one I was in in Dundee the other week.

That's more suited to Brixton Village don't you think? ;)

Because we're 'urban' we never get to see what the huge out of town supermarket stores have, just the 'express' style choices. I was quite impressed. It made Dundee seem right posh.

Bloody true, it is atrocious. A tarted up tube kiosk basically.

Kensington Tesco
Balham Waitrose
Dog Kennel Hill Sainsburys

All not THAT far and have good sections, there is life outside of Brixton ;)
