Alex Salmond accused (and then cleared) of sexual misconduct.

Would it be 'for Salmond' tho? Or would it simply be people who are hoping/trying to game the system to deliver the super-majority? 6% in those circumstances seems plausible, although a fair chunk of that would come from the greens
I’m never able to predict elections. I’m just saying I’d have said relying on Salmond being the selling point is a bit , well, counterintuitive.

Still, I suppose there’s room for a Sexist Dads party.

The sexist dad's that i know will probably continue to support their former options, be they SNP, Labour, Conservative etc.

Looking at their webpage, perhaps they haven't had time to change it yet, but Salmond is conspicuous by his absence. The justification for their existence is purely to game the system. They certainly don't hide that fact. They stop short of calling the current electoral system unfair, but only just. They correctly hint that the SNP would have a big majority if there were a simple fptp system, but that just reflects how grossly distorting fptp can be in favour of the party with the plurality.

And if I read them correctly, the aim is to win a 'supermajority' - more than 2/3 seats - for independence and then achieve independence without a referendum. Given that the last referendum said 'no', that appears guaranteed to cause division, no? Is it something that has wide support in Scotland?

tbh while many of those criticising the AP may be doing so in bad faith, they do appear to be intent on gaming the system to produce a bigger majority than their support justifies in order to bypass a second referendum. Their intentions are not entirely democratic in their underlying spirit.

i live with two anti sexist women, one is an SNP member. They are both considering their options. Neither has said they are ruling out the possibility of a vote for the AP.

Not wanting to defend Salmond's vile behaviour, but the comparison to Trump is ludicrous off the wall stuff. Obviously.

Do you think women will be tempted to support Alex Salmond's Alba?
Oh, I’ve heard plenty of women expressing the attitude “they were asking for it” regarding sexual assault and rape. I can see there being a number who don’t think Sleepy Cuddles has anything to apologise for. Sadly.

unfortunately that is my experience also. it is shocking, but some aspects of social culture in parts of Alba remain pretty retrograde. When we moved up from deepest England 15 years ago the contrast was stark..

That said, other political and cultural aspects quite progressive. (thought id make that clear!)

the attitude Danny describes is rife in the rest of the UK too, plus aren't you planning on voting for the sex pest??

Going back to the 'supermajority' route to independence, it appears to me to be a bit naive. It might just be a way to leverage a second referendum, I guess, but if not, it seems as naive as the Catalan nats thinking their self-run referendum would work. Given that the UK isn't Spain, and there is a route to independence within the UK's system that isn't available to the Catalans, is this a sensible tactic?

Idiot. As explained numerous times already, my 2nd vote will be for the Alba Party. Salmond may be a member, possibly the primary figure, but my vote will simply be a contribution towards achieving other objectives. it is NOT an endorsement of Salmond's cretinous behaviour.

Are you onboard with the 'supermajority' route to independence, then? How do you think that would go?

The electoral technicalities matter less to me than the opportunity to destabilise Johnson's gov and prospects. That said, i do detect a fair amount of frustration about the lack of progress towards independence amongst loyal SNP ers. Nicola isn't really reflecting that is she?

Well, if you look at the Alba Party website, it tells you.

“As the UK Government has formally and repeatedly ruled out a Section 30 referendum, Alba Party parliamentarians will require the implementation of May 2021 electoral mandates; to deliver an overwhelming Scottish Parliamentary vote to begin negotiations on Independence.”

In other words, no referendum: the majority is the mandate. Negotiations begin on winning the mandate.

This was always the SNP policy until Salmond replaced it with the referendum route. He’s returning to the old policy. He plans to use his kingmaker role to leverage the SNP into returning to it too.

Yes, I read that. I didn't know that was the old policy. It still seems fraught to me, though, particularly now that they've endorsed the principle of a referendum. Do you think this tactic would work? As I said above, it strikes me as potentially divisive, particularly if the majority is achieved without a decisive majority of votes cast.

Interestingly, it’s the method Thatcher said she’d respect. That was FPTP, too. A majority of SNP MPs. It’s probably the most common way colonies broke away from the Empire too.
