that's not true. you might be more attractive to an employer because you're employed - i think when i was on the dole i was told it was something like four times more attractive than someone on the rock.

but finding a job takes time and when you're working much of the day you can't be looking. not to mention that many people work in different fields from that they'd ideally like to.

Well, I took the Durham gig. . . which was just as well, because Edinburgh didn't even shortlist me for that post which I thought I would have been ideal for! (seriously, the person spec might have been specifically written for me. . . )

Yes, I have applied for a few jobs that seemed completely written for me to which the response was absolute silence. Eventually I found that the job I did accept was much more relevant for me than its job description suggested.
