5 days in the Peak District

Another firm vote for Cromford and the magnificent Scarthin books...will be there this weekend but will not be going in the bookshop.
A magnificent House up that way, older than Chatsworth but built by the same family is Hardwick Hall. Wonder at the story of Bess and how she made and displayed her wealth. The strongest, most influential, non royal female of her day.

I can't help singing 'Straight out of Cromford' everytime I'm there. I think it's where NWA originate from :D
You were beaten too it:

They also did Masters at Wirksworth :D

Don't go to the original Bakewell tart place. The original recipe is shit even Mr Rudyard's are better. Go down a cave or two and go for Afternoon Tea in Buxton, but steer clear of my Uncle Peter (florid complexion, blue eyes and golf clubs).

Been wanting to do something similar for the last couple of years but never got round to it. Had a funny turn at work a few weeks ago that scared the life out of me so nows the time to get off my arse and back into my walking boots. Looking at going up around 1st/ 2nd week in Sep, driving to Matlock or Bakewell, use that as a base and spend all week exploring . 2/ 3 hour walk in the morning, stop for lunch and a bit of a longer one in the afternoon . Gonna be needing somewhere to stay so i'd be grateful for any recommendations .

cheers. Pubs are not for me at the mo. I think its the Exeter Arms I remember fondly for a nice pint or two, good staff, food n pub.

But yeah, reasonable recommendations. The scramble up kinder scout is one of my favourites... Then ladybower can get a bit busy, but usually quieter up on the ridges, with good walking, views and prospects of vultures. A vulture. Also plunge pool on the far end. But midges down low.

Couple of factoids;

Peak District was the first national park in the UK
The name has nothing to do with the tops of hills
It has been inhabited since the Mesolithic period
Chatsworth House has a bowl made of Blue John, the largest object made of the stuff
I have an unhealthy interest in Blue John

Hence why it should be referred to as the Peak District or just the Peak, rather then the Peaks.

More facts...

The symbol of the Peak District is a millstone, a round stone with a hole in the middle, which enables you to wear it around your neck, an act which would of course hamper your movement, “a millstone around your neck” - not milestone, Frau Bahn...

I went on a school trip to Castleton aged 10 and spent a week trying to get a snog off Jane Andrews. I never got that snog. And she is not the same Jane Andrews who was Fergie’s dresser who murdered her boyfriend.

I also have many good memories of school day trips to the open air pool in Hathersage.

Great shout, that's a lovely thing to do if the weather is good (and it's open currently?). Browse of the gear at Outside, swim in the lido, and then dinner at a local pub is a nice few hours, especially after a climb or walk in the area. There's also an hidden old mill pond above Hathersage on the way up to Stanage that's worth a quick dip in.

Yes but make sure you book!

What a truly fantastic 5 days we had. The Peak District is stunning. Feels different from the Lake District and Snowdonia. Perhaps not as dramatic as those places but thats not to taking anything away from it. It's an English gem. Small enough to really see a lot too (if you have wheels).

Thanks again for all the tips and advice. Urban75 is always such a reliable resource for getting info before heading to somewhere new and you didn't let me down.

We stayed here. Not cheap but it'll be our only holiday this year so wanted to splash out. Had a lot of airb&b tokens due to a covid canceled trip to Symi in May.

We also done the cable car in Matlock Baths and the plague village Eyam on the only rainy day. Was so lucky with the weather.

Got a very nice indian take away from Rajas

Fucking amazing 5 days after 5 months of solitary confinement (almost) and was very much needed.

Thanks again x
