I stayed in that prison on a school trip!I've been to Helsinki and Stockholm in July and they were amazing. Though maybe not for GSV's sleep problems.
Though if you went to Stockholm and stayed in the former prison we spent part of our trip in you don't get much light at night. And it's been adapted into a hotel in a way that acknowledges its history in a non-gauche way. You have to sleep on bunk beds for obvious reasons, but that might not be a bad thing.
St. Petersburg is great.
And custard tarts. When I was there, I ate my bodyweight in custard tarts. Mmmmmmmmm.I'll suggest Lisbon too. It's a wonderful place with easy day trips one can make from it too. Sintra I think is one.
Great food and wine. Sunshine. Relatively cheap. What's not to love?

gsv said he's not feeling Lisbon, to my surprise. But he's quite keen on somewhere hot, which I think I am as well. Marrakech has long been high on our travel list, but my only concern as we move towards (ugh) 'living with COVID' is I wonder of poorer countries might be quicker to put in restrictions due to lower vaccination levels/coping ability - I have a feeling Morocco shut borders to UK fairly quick after Delta appeared, so I think maybe stick to more developed places to be on the safe side. I hadn't realised that Croatia's a further flight than Marrakech, but then it's obvious on a map!
Also slight heat concern for July - gsv loves boiling heat, he's like lizard and fine in 40C - I basically shrivel up and die over about 32.
A real fairy tale place. Can get very hot and very crowded in summer.Carcasonne (I just can’t spell this I’ve tried so many different ways) looks absolutely magical I would blimmin love to go there
what is the cost of living like for a visiter - eating, drinks etc. How does it compare to London?Copenhagen is the most beautiful place in the summer. The entire city seems to dive into the harbour and use it as a giant playground
a little more expensive.what is the cost of living like for a visiter - eating, drinks etc. How does it compare to London?
When I went to Copenhagen, I found it a lot more expensive than London.a little more expensive.
It’s about the same as midrange London; you can’t spend gazillions on a top end meal- even noma isn’t that expensive. But also you can’t get the mega bargains you get in London (you buy coffee from people who can afford to drink it themselves )what is the cost of living like for a visiter - eating, drinks etc. How does it compare to London?
The hotel we stayed at was certainly not cheap, but from a bar we regularly drank at, so about £7 may £8 a beer

It is lovely. Been there though - I'd want to get back with kids at some point.Seville. Beautiful, fab food, under 3 hour flight, ticks all the culture boxes.
great food for sureI'll second Bilbao then. Also San Sebastien, but there's no airport so you need to fly into Bilbao or Biarritz.

There is an airport, I flew in to it 2 years ago, code is EAS and it straddles the French border.
