2 weeks - Vietnam and Cambodia, or just one?

Read Bill Hayton's Rising Dragon if you want to glimpse into the reality of Vietnam's society and politics. All is not what it seems.

Travel weariness is inevitable. With only 2 weeks you just need to do your own thing & make the trip worth while. Remember the air miles.

Just got to Hue, we've decided to fuck Danang off, and have an extra night in hoi an, and visit the marble mountains from there. However I'm not thinking about having an extra night in Hue, having two nights in hoi an, and having an extra day in Hue, I've basically currently got an afternoon and a full day in Hue planned, but I don't think it's going to be enough......

Am I better off with a little less time in Hoi An and more in Hue?

I'm also considering the same for Nha Trang, and having an extra night in Ho Chi Minh Cty...... Nha trang looks largely like beach stuff, which would be nice, but I'm not a massive beach person...... plus the weather is rainy

yes, I think youre right to skip danang, and you'd be better off with less in hoi ann , more in hue, and the same for skipping nha trang and having more hcmc. I wasn't super keen on hoi ann but loads and loads of people really like it , I felt it was a bit sanitised tbh but there's beach there as well as other stuff to do. There's much more interesting stuff to do and see in hue and hcmc than danang and nha trang imv
Go with your gut though, I don't think you can avoid having a good and interesting time whatever you decide, I was in Vn for a month and it wasn't enough so whatever you do you'll leave wishing you'd been able to be there longer and do more.

I'd recommend Ba Na Hills cable car over the Marble Mountains, take scooter (early) arrive before the crowds.

It's an amazing ride, quite tacky at the top, but the hill top temples walking further up are very quiet and relaxing.

Quick word of warning that the guide books don't give you. We arrived in HCM - and were immediately stuck in a 3 hour traffic jam as the city's infrastructure literally overflowed with water (I see you said it's raining). This is such a regular occurrence you will see postcards celebrating this.

Good to hear your updates though and glad you seem to be enjoying things. Wasn't much a fan of Hue, though it had its good points certainly, but it definitely had the cheapest internet cafe in the world I came across. 2p an hour. That said, do Internet cafes still exist there? They don't in most of the rest of the world, Apple having taken control.

Happy travelling anyway.

Agree with the advice given. I really disliked Hoi Anh as it's chocolate box touristy with the accompanying constant pressure from touts. Hue is more of a real place and the Ngyuen family tombs surrounding the city are well worth a look.

Ah the girls have decided they want to go to Hoi An tomorrow, so it looks like we're off there. I've managed to get the Citadel and the DMZ done though. And I convinced them to do the tour I wanted to, which whilst being bloody expensive (well by Vietnamese standards anyway - $35) is by far the most unbiased, informative (both about the war and in Vietnam in general) thing I've done here. So I'm pretty happy.

Bicycle tour and food tour are what we're planned for Hoi An. Obviously depends on the weather though.

Oh don't get me wrong....Hoi Anh is lovely. It's just a bit Disneyland and it was unbearably hot and humid when I was there which didn't help!

I'd recommend the 5am trip out to the Mai Son temples from Hoi Anh. Nobody is there at that time and it's lovely. Not a patch on Siem Reap in Cambodia but still worth a look.

I also did a food tour and cooking class with Ms Vy which was great.

Yes that was one of our best trips, just wish the bus had left earlier. It was about 33C by 7AM

Whilst I like the notion of going, it's monsoon season. I've just walked home from a bar in ankle high water.

Have you got a pointy hat yet? ;)

Wish I was in an asian monsoon at the moment :)
No pointy hat.

I've had a 3 piece suit, with matching tie, hanky and 2 shirts tailored, going to get it shipped home.

Contemplating a north face jacket, either gore tex or down, can't decide what's more useful.

Seriously contemplating a silver necklace for mum too. I've missed her birthday. So may splash out on a pressie.

I want to get some tat too.... was looking at propaganda posters, cant decide if they're real or fake..... there's a user here who knows all of this kind of stuff isn't there?

Really liking Hoi An, we've decided to have another night here, skip nha trang and go direct to HCMC for 4 days.

I'm having a bit of down time in the hostel, so thought I'd write up my thoughts, if no one else is interested at least I can look back of the thread and have some kind of record.

What I've seen so far of vietnam, I really like, I've found the street vendors a bit pushy and a bit sneaky, but in comparison to Asian countries I've only got Japan and China to compare too, that said I've really loved being out in the country, people are friendly and smiley and really rather helpful. I've been surprised at how cheap things are here, but it makes sense when speaking to the guy who took us to the DMZ who said factory workers earning about $50 dollars a month is standard, he also said many people here have family who left after the war and send money back to them, but said they don't tend to spend it wisely in his view, they'll live on what they earn, but they'll spend savings they get from abroad on tombs for deceased, that $50k isn't unheard of for a tomb.

I wish I'd have spent some more time in Hanoi and Hue, I really didn't get to see as much as I'd have liked to, but I've loved Hoi An, although yeah it is quite picture postcardy. A lot of Hoi An has been flooded since I've been here, so things that I've wanted to do haven't always been accessible. We booked on to Ms Vy's cooking class but couldn't get to it, so we're going to try again tomorrow, but if there's floods (which they keeping pronouncing as "flewds" then they'll refund us). We've had free bikes to borrow so have been pootling around Hoi An on those which has been great.

I'm actually really rather jealous of the girls I'm here with who are touring the area, off to Cambodia and some other countries after, but on the flip side, it's got to a point where they're worried about budgets, and end up squabbling about lending each other 30p, and wanting to stay in the new hotel room and snooze etc, because they're so tired.

It's the first Asian country I've been to that I think I could live in, but I guess I'm seeing

posters are 99.9% faked or replicas. They soak old newly printed posters on old stock and soak them in tea before rapid drying to give than that friable texture amongest other tricks..get one of you want a souvenier but dont expect to look upon it as an investment. Some of the modern hand painted ones are nice but silly money asked to naive tourists

Hometime.

Very sad to be leaving, both the country and my chums as they carry on to Cambodia, Thailand, Aus and NZ :(

Been back one day and I'm already pining to go back.

Does anyone know of a good english vietnamese recipe website? I've got loads of things I ate I want to try and make.

Why does Vietnamese coffee taste so utterly different ? It does take some getting used to but I'd love to try some in London.

The coffee beans are roasted in cacao and butter. Its also a different grind.

You want the Sang Tao 1 Trung Nguyen coffee (Culi Robusta)
Dragon Coffee - Finest Gourmet Coffees from Vietnam Dragon Coffee Online Shop

Obviously you use the condensed milk (I just used carnation sweetened), but I think they use the longevity brand

How there isn't a stall/coffee bar selling vietnamese coffees in the UK, I have no clue..... I'm tempted to trial run a festival stall to be honest.

It's an acquired taste I think. Thanks for the info. I did have some coffee in Sapa that was poorly made, it was disgusting :(

Most people I've given some to since I've been home love it.

Yeah I cocked my first try up, it wasn't great tbh..... You need to get the drip speed just right to get that kind of thick coffee texture/flavour.

I've spent quite a bit of time on the Vietnam reddit trying to get it nailed :)

Anyone got any recommendations for where to go in Cambodia? I'm going there next week for about 10 days, flying in and out of Phnom Penh. Planning on going to Siem Reap and maybe Sihanoukville because I wanted to go to the beach. What other places should I think of going to? Is it worth spending a couple of days in Phnom Penh?

Sihanouk like is a bit tacky at the beach. Plus seedy. Easy boat ride from there to koh rong or one of the other fabulous islands though.

If you don't fancy the boat ride Otres is better for beach chilling.

Good music scene in Phnom Penh if that's your cup of tea.
