2 weeks - Vietnam and Cambodia, or just one?

Well, its nearly the other side of the world :D
It was a fucking long flight, gotta say. Practically empty plane on way back though so could stretch out. Plus Thai do a sunrise lighting thing with mauve and peach lights and stuff. Was lovely :D

What dates you thinking of? 9-21 is 905 on Thai or 405 on Vietnam

1-15 on Vietnam is 451. That's to pnh and out of Ho Chi Minh and the super cheapest. Just a guide for you

Book this ASAP.

No one is thinking of tropical holidays while its 32* here. Or before the summer holidays start. This is the sweet spot, do not delay.

I'm just waiting for my friends to confirm some dates, which they're saying they're going to do over the weekend.

They actually don't have anything booked hostel wise except for the first night.... is that likely to be a problem?

No problem at all.

Cambodia I booked nothing. In Nam I used booking.com a few times - usually the day before required.

We used booking.com or maybe hotels.com to be organised for first and last nights in PNH then in country (and poolside) for the rest of it, plus just turned up in a tuk tuk to a beach village and wandered about until we liked the look of somewhere

Heading over that area next week. Doing some bit I did do last time and some Islands I didn't.

Does anyone know if there is a boat between Krong Kampot to Phu Quoc or do you have to cross the mainland border? I have heard you do not need a visa if you cross on mainland as it is a designated special zone or something.

Yeah, and if you get chance fire of an AK47 go for it. I did it at a place near Phnom Phen. I had just taken a cardboard terrorist down when a piss up Aussie chucked up down my back. He was lucky.

So it looks like I'm actually going.

The general plan looks to be 1 night in Hanoi, 1 night in Halong Bay, 1 night in Hue, 1 night in Do Nang, 3 nights in Hoi An, 1 night in Nha Trang, and 2 nights in Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) - although I find planners quite hard to read so I might be messing up the number of nights in each.

Ill fly in to Hanoi, and then Ill get an internal flight from Saigon to to Hanoi, and then fly home. It also looks like Ill need a visa because I'll be over the 15 day limit for visa free.

Has anyone got suggestions of what to look at or hostel to stay in in those places?

If you go to da nang check out Kangaroo Bar and Burger. Really friendly australian/viet couple who are super friendly and will join you for a cold beer. Good food too (vegi friendly).

Hanoi, stay in the old town it's nuts, stay at least 2 nights, more to see than Saigon.

Danang, make sure to go on the cable car up to the fake french town. Longest in the world.

Ditch Nha trang, find one of the nicer beach places further south. It's full of gloomy Ruskis and the beaches aren't great.

Ah we've already booked the place in Hanoi

I think we're mainly swinging by Nha Trang to get on a motorbike tour off to sa...... somewhere or other, I can't remember the name.

I went to both Vietnam and Cambodia for just over two weeks in 2014 and had a wonderful holiday. Both me and my better half thought Cambodia was a much nicer and much more relaxed country but we didnt see much of mainland Vietnam. From memory we done the following...

• 2 nights in Hi Chi Minh City
• 2 or 3 nights on Phu Quoc beautiful island (which is actually more in Cambodian territory and disputed between the two nations)
• Ferry back to Ha Tien and then a bus into Cambodia
• 2 nights in kampot (really nice)
• 5 nights in sihanoukville (lovely)
• 3 nights in Phnom Penh
• Flew back to Hi Chi Minh City for 1 more night and visited the Cu Chi Tunnels (great) and fired an M16 which is a weird experience.

With highsight I wish we'd just done Cambodia but we really had a fantastic trip. Feel free if you have any questions.

I'm fully intending on firing an AK if I can.

I've also been told if I ask about I can RPG a cow...... but thats a little extreme for me, so I may see if I can do it to an old car or something.

You can fire fucking anything if you have the money. The selection was staggering. I wasn't given the option of shooting livestock though.

I think we should be quite glad of this, I bet some vindictive fuck with loads of money could destroy and entire farm in about 10 mins if they wanted to.

Just saying like. everyone has told me this and I have done the shootin' thang but no cow was offered. I have heard variations like grenade/ water buffalo. cow/ RPG. Obvoously someone will come along and say they did tear gas a bull, stab a goat with a commando knife or whatever. at that point I will call them a vile sadistic murderous cunt and create enough bluster to conceal the fact that I have been proved wrong.

I'd be very loose and easy-breezy about my itinerary if I went again. It's a long way and its fucking hot and I spent the first couple of days acclimatising and tbh didn't feel fantastic most of the time  I might just be a wuss though. Point is if you get knackered & if it's 36* you might want to plonk yourself down somewhere for a couple of days and recover, you know what I mean.

Yeah I think there's going to be some chilling at the coast..... although Ill probably look and see if I can scuba dive there.

Can anyone recommend dipped mosquito nets and brands of deet?

Apparently I don't get malaria pills when I go, but I'm paranoid as I saw my uncle with malaria and it was fucking horrid.

i don't think you will need it where you're going. Get any old deet and you will be fine.

i just used citronella bought locally.
