100th Anniversary of the Portugues Communist Party

Never a member of the PCP but nevertheless a significant figure in the revolution died two days ago, Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho.

Obituary:

There was some debate, in the Portuguese media. on his death about how he should be remembered. Some commentators and newspapers focussed on his links to FP-25, with an agenda to characterise the left in the revolution as terrorists, others focussed on his role within the revolution as bringing democracy to Portugal. and the ending of fascism. ( this was the ruling Socialist Party's line) . There was little unfortunately on his and Copcons contribution to the extraordinary democracy from below that the revolutionary period brought.

The author of the obituary by the way has contributed to some excellent stuff about the land and factory occupations and also the presence of the international left in Portugal during the revolution.
