My dad had one of those. Fascinated by anything like that, I got him to show me how it worked, borrowed it and took it to school. Got told in physics to "stop messing about and use a calculator like everyone else", bah.
I was always getting told to stop messing about just for being clevvah, and I couldn't afford a calculator!

The reason they shine at night is that they're high enough to still be catching the sun (which at the summer solstice is not that far below the horizon) long after other clouds.
Must have been alot lower though... this was happening around 10.30pm... visible elsewhere in the Uk. Down here in Laandan it was fading at 11pm. All gone now.
