women in sitcoms

hash tag

Books, not bombs
For sitcoms dads army, it ain't arf hot mum, Steptoe and son, on the buses all spring to mind and predominantly male. There were one or two with women in but portrayals not particular good IE. Are you being served or men behaving badly.
The only female leads/dominated sitcom to spring to mind was birds of a feather.
Name me some more, please.
Disclaimer. I did not use the words decent or funny!

There are countless US sitcoms starring womeb, the most influential having been The Mary Tyler Moore Show, but there honestly are too many to mention. The likes of The Golden Girls and Designing Women starred women only ensembles.

There were a lot of British ones too, like The Liver Birds, Girls on Top or Dinnerladies.

Just off the top of my head:

Gimme gimme gimme
Absolutely Fabulous
Miranda
Derry Girls
The Vicar of Dibley
Gameface

Of those I think Miranda and Dibley are shite. Haven’t watched Derry Girls.

Vicar of Dibley, of course. That's the only one I've seen. Know the names of some of the others.

 The liver birds, whatever happened to...

Bread had a strong woman as did the thing about the LarkinS.

In the UK "Man abut the House" and "George and Mildred", Yootha Joyce became the principal character in the former and had the second designed around the character she played . I love Lucy from the USA, which was awful and always on British TV in the late 60's and early 70's.
