Only Habermas I ever read was a load of bollocks, about how in the 19th century middle class moral reform associations and so on managed to create a sphere of free debate and association - a civil society free from the encroachment of state and market - completely ignoring the fact that most people never had access to it and that market and state interests always had an influence (though he does admit that this took place later). I wasn't impressed at all.
