Who's got the heating on?

Have you put the heating on?

I definitely need to look after my toes better... perhaps it's my borderline gout, but I was feeling it in bed last night even with the electric blanket cranked-up.
I need some sort of slippers that I will actually wear - and / or a furry box thing or a foot warmer for when I'm wasting my life away on the PC... and it's silly not to use some sort of heated clothing instead of heating the whole room...

The main signifier - that autumn has arrived - is the wearing of thermals. So far, still just got my canvas work trousers without a layer of woollies. In the post though. The really big change (for me) occurs when my winter leathers come out of hibernation. Boots, thermals and leathers, along with the winter jumpers, usually happens after Xmas for those freezing months of January, February and always here in wi8ndy East Anglia, March. Fortunately, I redeemed the winter months with a fragrant winter garden...so the dark days of January are vastly improved with the blooms of sparmannia, coronilla, Christmas box, winter honeysuckle, viburnums, scented galanthus (Sam Arnott) and best of all, the wonderful daphnes (tangutica and bholua).

After my years of not having the heating on, this winter I am trying to put it on for a bit every other day - we've got a bit of a damp problem in the bedroom which is partly due to condensation (been an ongoing issue since they pumped a load of insulation into the walls of the building a few years back, and having more of an impact these days it seems - in colder weather), so some time with the bedroom window open each day followed by the heating being on long enough to take the chill off (30 mins) + running a dehumidifier for a bit is helping to get that under control.

It's not as energy efficient as I would like, but OH ends up in hospital with asthma more frequently than I would like, so it has to be tackled.

apt building, steam heat, temperatures set by law, hence turns on automatically, yes it has come up a few times.

Darn - winter has started with a vengeance - 12 degrees in my well-insulated bedroom - I may have to get out the oil-filled radiator soon :(

I hope my new electric blanket comes today - I struggle to imagine how I used to cope downstairs without one - I probably used a sleeping bag some of the time ... it's so draughty down there it was more like camping. I'm OK at the moment with my clothes on and two duvets ...
I suppose it's something you get used to ... luckily in the winter of 2009/10 or whenever it was, I still had a 7KW gas fire (my neighbour had to cap the chimney a few years back becaus the damp was getting into his plaster ...)

I also wear more layers these days - it was never more than 2 tee shirts then, it's 4 plus a heavy shirt at the moment - I even cycled in that to the deli yesterday .. if it had been a longer ride I would have had to brave the cold to swap out the two inner damp ones to avoid hypothermia ...
In a few years' time if things work out and I'm sail-camping in the winter I will have to invest in proper outdoor clothing.

Worth looking out for some synthetic base layers in Aldi or Lidl? They can make a world of difference in the situations you describe and dry so much quicker.

My central heating is broken (well condemned to the pits of hell)

So I'm using a great heater I got from Lidl last year and yes it is on.

How much leccy do those oil heaters use?

And will they warm a cold room with poor insulation?

They come in different capacities but even a small one left on all day should work well in an enclosed modest-sized room. It'll cost a bit to run though, gas is still a lot (about 4 times) cheaper than electricity.

I think mine is 800/ 1600 watts - they have thermostats - 1kw = 20p per hour.
I try to hold out till the last .. I back it up with a small fan heater.

It’s 11.8 indoors and I’m comfortable enough with a small terrier, a large cat and a blanket on my lap! If it goes down to single figures indoors I’d just go to bed. The heating can stay off until it’s cold enough to worry about pipes freezing, and it’s nowhere near that.

Got it fixed 👍🏻 Finally at 10:30pm ish.

£200 call out for an out of hours though :/ And all it was, was a bit of water build-up not draining. Quick disconnect of pipe, quick drain, pops it back on and bob’s your uncle - fixed. No tools even required. Took like 2 mins if that.

I was like I COULD’VE DONE THAT!!!

Yes, but then you would be getting between a working man and his meal.

You’re a lot more hardy than me… as soon as I see 19 on the indoor thermometer I’m turning the boiler up to get back up to 20.
