Put the heating on just now for an hour or so to take the chill off the bedrooms. Had a nice fire in the wood-burner since about 7pm, now letting it burn out.

I bought a huge trailer of firewood the other month. The first North Wales winter after moving from temperate (sort of) London last year was a shock. The pipe from the LPG canisters froze and we had no central heating for a bit :)

Last night was halloumi marinated in a bbq sauce with chips & a carrot & apple slaw & tonight was a butternut squash bhuna, rice & my new fave carrot pickle.

Our heating is on for a couple of hours in the evening now. Maybe a little bit in the day. We have odd rooms that heat at different rates.

Do people, if they’re home, have the heating on all the time when it’s cold? Or just for selected times in the morning and evening?
I’m cat sitting at my brother’s and it’s freezing so have switched the heating from the timer for when they’re out of the house all day and I’m worried if I have sinned for doing so. I was fully layered up already before switching it on.

Mine is always on when I am in & awake, but set to a fairly low 17c, the place is well insulated & double glazed, so once it has warmed-up in the morning, it rarely fires up again until the evening.

Similar here. Couldn’t sleep with it on, but nice to wake up to a warm home.
I used to live in a tiny flat that would heat up and cool down too quickly and we’d have to switch it on and off constantly and even open windows cos the thermostat didn’t seem terribly nuanced. It was either full on or not at all. Very inefficient. But the place I live in is well insulated and keeps its heat in so it not often necessary to have it on all day. My brother’s place is well draughty though so it’s staying on all day.

Well, as you're cat sitting for them, you deserve to be warm.

That's up north, mate.

Had the gas C/H on for about 20 minutes this morning, and again this evening, that's enough, as luckily this place is well insulated.

Mine’s on if I’m home and it’s cold enough but it’s zoned so only on in the rooms I’m using.

We had to have all our windows and doors open yesterday as the outside of the block is being painted. It wasn't very warm.
The painting was not completed until about 15.30 which meant we had to leave them all open until about 19.30
Mrs Tag was not happy when she got home from work.

I was a bit shivery in bed earlier without a functioning electric blanky, but it's actually warmed back up in Bristol. They gritted the main road the other day which surprised me ....
The Express predictably promises horrors to come ... perhaps to distract the frail elderly from worse things ...
