Where can I quickly get humane mouse traps?

Epona

Sonic: 1 Nov 2006 - 8 Jan 2022
I am in East London (Canning Town/Plaistow but can get to East Ham or Stratford easily).

Yes I know snap traps are humane in terms of a quick kill - but I set them and they are utterly useless, the little fuckers grab the bait and then run off laughing without having set off the traps. And I can't put snap traps (however useless) in areas the cats (also useless for mouse hunting at this stage in their lives) can access

It is beyond a joke at this point, we are horribly infested and one of the elderly cats occasionally springs into action if he sees one but it is ineffective and a bit like watching Dad's Army.

I need some of those humane tube traps as they are safe to set in places the cats can access without idiot cat getting his paw broken, but I cannot seem to buy them locally

(And I do know that they aren't humane if you don't check them regularly).

The only options to buy locally are small snap traps (which the mice seem to avoid and just take the bait off them as a source of food) or glue traps, which are horrifically inhumane and also a hazard to pets.

Only if my money is going to send Bezos to Mars never to return :(

I was thinking maybe shopping locally, you know, the way we used to do things.
You already said you'd tried that. Bezos can get to fuck, but sometimes if you want a quick and easy solution Amazon is a quick and easy answer.

TBH, we had mice the summer before last and those humane traps are useless.

I have cats and have tried snap traps but the fuckers are just grabbing the bait without setting off the trap!

I saw there was a mouse near the loo earlier, so I baited a snap trap with a bit of stale chocolate mini-roll and left it for a bit. I went to the loo later and 3 mice scarpered from near the trap area (one taking a bit of a detour up my leg!!!) and the fuckers had nicked the bit of mini-roll without setting off the trap and were having some sort of mini roll picnic.

I just can't take any more, I don't want to be unduly cruel and I have cats who although they are useless these days for mouse hunting, they may eat one or try to if they find it immobilised or sick (so glue traps and poison are out - well glue traps would be anwyay because that is horrifically inhumane) so I want to try another way before I lose my mind. It's horrible being this infested. And the fuckers pull the bait off the snap traps without setting them off and seem to be having a picnic around the fucking trap, so all I am doing is providing feeding stations for them.

I found they’d take the bait and run off too when I had them so I made sure to use sticky bait. Peanut butter really squished down or melted chocolate.
It really needs to be stuck so they struggle when taking it.

OK will try that, can't do peanut butter (which I know is the bait of choice) because I have a severe peanut allergy. Do you think they'd go for salted caramel spread? At the moment they are just taking the piss and removing the bait (chocolate mini-roll squished onto the end of the trap) from the traps and having a party with it.

(And I am not joking, I put a bit of chocolate mini-roll on the trap and half an hour later there was a gathering of mice feasting on the bit of mini-roll that they had removed from the trap without setting the trap off. It's not even funny tbh because we are so infested).

Yeah, sweet and sticky
Good luck

What about Pets at Home down Beckton triangle? by where the big Sainsbury’s & B&Q are. I think you can get a bus from East Ham,

Good luck tho mate, sounds awful.

I have snap traps everywhere the cats (now old and lazy) can't get to. I swear the fuckers just remove the bait without setting the traps off, I either have defective traps or supermice.

Jakey still gives the impression that he is interested in hunting but sometimes he will sit looking intensely in one corner of the room while there are mice dancing around his tail.

If Radar were still alive he'd be sorting it out 😢 This has only been an issue since he died, he was the world's best mouser!

I bet they were laughing as they ran away with the mini roll. An alternative to penult butter that works is a half a Rolo squished into the bait holder. Or more sensitive traps.

Robert Dyas at Canary Wharf have humane mouse traps but when I bought some they weren't big enough for what I had which was actually a rat.

Yeah I am a little bit concerned that some of the droppings I have found in the spare room are a bit too big for mice. I mean I know we have mice because I disturbed a few of the little fuckers having a mini roll bait party earlier :( but I can't absolutely say that we don't have rats too. :(

The quality of traps, or anything really, you get in those local everything shops are rubbish and a waste of money.

Is there any was you can stretch to getting an exterminator (or whatever they’re called) in?

This has all happened since Radar died, he was the bestest mouser - he didn't play with them, he grabbed them and instinctively put his paw on their hind quarters and yanked their head upwards with his mouth, breaking their neck and instantly killing them. We occasionally had mice (and quickly dead mice) but never had a mouse problem while he was alive.

(And I do think Radar was a massive difference to pest control in our block, he had mouse detection and capture superpowers and since he died it has all gone to shit)

The issue with getting an exterminator in is that we live in an absolute shithole of mess which isn't helpful but OH views it as bullying/nagging if I try to get him to clear out some of his piles of shit :( I don't want to involve the council if possible because time limits will be put on us doing x y and z which may not actually help but they could pin the issue on us (unfairly).

Perhaps the alternate question that lies at the other side of this is "how much of my OH's piles of crap do you think I can get rid of before he notices and throws an absolute wobbler".

Even with traps it’s gonna be impossible to get rid because there’s no chance of finding the entry points to your yard.

I know you’ve spoken about OH before which is a whole different conversation.

Best of luck with it mate. Wish there was a magic answer.

It does need to be those humane tube traps though, I can put those anywhere and they won't hurt the cats

The Little Nipper traps I've found are best (they have a spike  ) although they don't always get caught when the traps are set off as you say.

Humane ones this is quite clever and does work: 2x HUMANE MOUSE TRAPS No Kill Catch & Release Home Garden Pest Rodent Control | eBay

As does this: Trip Trap Mice Pest Control Stop Humane Live Animal Clear Easy No Harm for sale online | eBay

I got mine off ebay,

If you've got rats you need to check the "I've got a rat" thread. I found cutting off their water supply the way to catch them (mice can get water from their food, rats can't). They set off the traps without being caught too though.

I have the mouse size ones in Romford if you had some way of picking them up. A tube one and one of the white box ones. If I can find them under all my OH's fucking junk.

It's a block issue, we're on the top floor and it isn't just us. Last year we had to replace a light fitting and we took the old one off and a load of chewed up shit and mouse droppings poured out of the hole  And the ceiling cavity* is not our remit. It is difficult to know what to do when you are just 1 flat in a block, all you can do is try to keep on top of it as much as you can.

* There isn't a loft or any space that anyone can access, it is a flat roof with like 3cm of space between our plasterboard ceiling and the roof across the entire span of the ceiling.

If they are grabbing the food without setting off the trap, try putting some extra weight on the trap, such as a penny, to make it more sensitive.

I will try that, thanks for the tip! I am a bit scared of the snap traps hurting a cat paw though, I'd rather use some other alternative if possible. I can only put snap traps in areas that I am 100% sure the cats can't get to because it could fracture a cat's paw or cause other damage (and therefore traps can only cover a small % of spaces that the mice access)

And yeah I hate to say it but 2x 14+ year old cats are fairly shit when it comes to mousing. I love them to bits and would do anything for them but they are fucking useless lazy bastards who wouldn't catch a mouse if it ran right across their face (which I have seen happen, no exaggeration) to be fair :D

Radar was an absolutely amazing mouser.

At this point you are beyond traps. Picking a couple off here and there won't help.

It's pest control with chemical warfare which is required.

. You have mouse dropping pouring from the ceiling fitments
. You maybe have rat droppings
. You have habituated mice to the idea of being fed mini rolls
. You have habituated mice to not be scared of the cat
. You frequently see them in groups
. You have so many that run over the cat and over you

From your description, traps won't do it.

Wouldn't work for the ones I have they're on a hair trigger - I think the mice absail :( . I have glued a small weight to the door of the bottom trap I linked to though, that works really well now.

I love the fact that someone who I have never had any conversation with in the entire 20 years I have been here has waded in to tell me that traps won't work, can I ask what your professional pest control credentials are fuck seals ??
