Where are you on the transport network?

What could possibly lift the spirits on a cold, dark, wet and miserable January morning?

Perhaps the sight of the newly rebuilt crossover complex to the west of Lewisham station, hopefully heralding improved reliability for commuter services in the south east of London and beyond?

I'm shocked to think I've not been to Marylebone before. Rather cute (inside and out).

i'm not sure i've ever travelled by (main line) train to or from marylebone.

i did take some photos there some time in the mid / late 80s when it was still all semaphore signalling and first generation diesel units, and there was a strong possibility it would follow broad street in to closure...

Does it offer long distance routes nowadays? It’s mainly Buckinghamshire and that part of the world, no?

there are trains to oxford, stratford on avon, birmingham

think it's a bit slower than going from paddington / euston, but may be cheaper

It's not the only station in London where you can arrive or depart by a regular timetabled diesel locomotive hauled train.

And only quite recently has become an alternative route to Oxford.

I believe it had a reputation in the 90s as the most reliable commuter line out of London, and it is speculated that this was not unconnected to various senior British Rail managers living along it. I've no idea how much truth there is in this, perhaps davesgcr can comment...

I saw it (from an outside perspective) more as it being one of the simplest lines to operate - few conflicting movements, and not having to fit in round other operators' trains to any great extent (if at all) and having relatively new rolling stock.

But also thanks to quite a substantial investment / upgrade carried out in the late 80s though, which I think replaced all the signalling in one go, refurbished the stations and brought in new trains.

i wasn't quite sure when the re-signalling happened, but that would make sense. i was away from london much of the 90s and london, NW has never really been my patch...
