What "proper job" WFH jobs are there?

I would def try IT support or other first line response... even if not specifically IT. Could be like careline stuff etc, with a similar software system etc. A lot of that is all remote now. And you have enough work experience to bring lots of other skills to your new job, make sure you big yourself up in that respect.

They are definitely short on people in a lot of these kind of jobs is my impression. It's never too late to try something new! Especially if you subtly make clear you have no plan to retire any time soon haha.

Have you tried just setting the filter to "remote" on Indeed and having a good butchers at all the stuff being listed that's semi local? Well worth doing. You could then upload your CV aimed at those sort of areas, even if fairly junior role etc.

There are a lot of WFH jobs in clinical research about (I know because my place has been v. keen on pushing a "return to the office" policy and we've had something of an exodus).

Yeah, I have my bookmark for Indeed set to Remote by default. But I would never upload my CV to Indeed as it's publicly viewable. When Mr Back was job hunting he got all sorts of agencies offering to put him forward for this, that, and the other. NONE of them came through. We eventually realised that if they contact you for something it's because no other bugger wants to do it and you're the bottom of the barrel. And we also learned NEVER put your phone number on your CV - all you'll get is spam calls.

What kind of hours restrictions do you have in terms of childcare? Just wondering if evening working would be better (when your OH could take over childcare).

As long as I'm around during the day, working or otherwise, we're good.

How old is mini-Back? It's not easy to work from home while looking after a young child. If they're at school or nursery at least part-time it's doable though.

You could try registering on some copywriting sites. Fiverr seems to be an OK one that some people get some work through. Although presumably experience and references help, some people on there are barely able to write in English at all, but seem to be getting work, so it's probably worth a try.

Sorry, just realised that's not a proper job!

Ah. Missing piece of info. I have to be around at home to look after mini-Back while Mr Back is out earning a crust. :)
How old is mini Back? If less than school age an employer may insist on childcare coverage whilst you are WFH.

Insurance companies have a lot of staff WFH. I don't know if the companies will be keen to get everyone back in, or to have smaller offices

My job involves a lot of data entry and virtually no paper - not sure if covid was the Big Bang that made them go paperless but it seems to work anyway

But surely, if what you have to type from is already digital - why does it need a human to do it?

The last data entry job I had was for an online garden centre/supplies type place. They advertised in newspapers and people would cut out and fill in the tiny order forms and we had to type in the details from those little coupons.

Boring as hell but it got me access to their database of customers and out of curiosity I looked up who now lived in the house I grew up in.

Non convertible formats - extrapolating info from PDF or emails and inputting into a payroll system. Also need to make judgements eg assessing eligibility to SxP and occupational from the evidence provided
I'm an accountant and get the majority of data from clients in digital form these days. Like Elpenor I get some data via emails and pdf/jpg etc. files. They also send spreadsheets and files created for specific bookkeeping software.

For higher volume bookkeeping jobs I use AI software to interpret documents in pdf or other image formats. It works well at pulling together the relevant information but still needs tweaking and analysing.

Even before COVID there was a move to cloud-based solutions in my industry resulting from the government trying to push Making Tax Digital (MTD). COVID has accelerated the shift.

I'm not saying bookkeeping or payroll is something that's easy to get into for anyone without training but it's now very easy to do remotely (WFH) if you have the skills as the tools are now there.
