What kind of shops would you like to see in the Brixton Arcades?

I've allowed a shop that you'll like. Here's the list of units opening up in an arcade near you

A dancerie
A gay bar
Wine and International Beers of the World Shop (also selling whiskey/whiskys, brandies etc. not available in your normal high street store)
A decent menswear shop that doesn’t sell safari suits/vile shirts
A candle/Christmas shop
An independent book shop
A Citizens Advice Bureau
A small unit to display local artists changing weekly
An old style sweetshop
An international non-prescription medicine place
An international ex-pat foodie place
A picture framers
Gardening shop
Pet Shop
Decorators’ shop
Hardware shop
A Fancy Dress Shop (just for Orang Utan)
International Tea Shop

Sounds fab apart from the candle and Christmas shop. I kind of lost my love of Christmas decorations when I had to dress a house as if it was Christmas in August and suffer at the horrid Christmas shop in Borough full of American tourists buying decorations

That's just to shut that short Scottish woman up ;)

It won't just be candles, it'll be joss sticks/cones, infusers, oils etc. How are the middle class going to have dinner parties without candles eh?

The Christmas shop would change at Easter to become an Easter shop and change towards Guy Fawkes night to sell er... anything but fireworks. It would be like an independent Clinton's Cards... with candles :D

OK, I think a nice large unit for you at a reduced rent to reflect the fact that there used to be one and it left. However, your window display must have some lovely fish tanks and fish in it as fish are calming, and Brixton needs calming

I think if you could offer really good advice and products you could make a go of it. The pet shops in Streatham and Herne Hill don't seem to be doing too badly. Mr Shakes would be a regular customer, he buys the cats more treats than me these days

Anyway, you haven't heard my plan for the other arcades yet, so don't be moaning about lack of food

No you can not have a fucking Greggs

I see, it's a yupster arcade then.
By the way, is there a Greggs in Brixton? Not that southern Greggs are any cop as they don't do meat and potato pies.

Could we have a northern pie stall then? Proper wholesome food from Wigan?

In Electric Avenue

Bookmongers is the best second hand bookshop in the world. With added dog. We don't need another one.

No, not a second hand book shop, I was seconding someones suggestion of a bookshop. One that has the ability to sell books to your kindle, in case santa brings me a kindle.

if you get a kindle, you'll probably never buy a book again.

There should be a caff/sandwich shop which sells sausage rolls and slices of proper apple pie. Supermarkets all sell those crappy bramley apple pies.

In fact there should be an apple pie shop and all it can sell is proper no fuss apple pie.

Opposite Honest Burgers, photo studio / picture shop - they sell frames and do custom ones.

Ah. Never noticed it. I got an awkwardly sized print at the urban art fair.

I don't pay much attention to the new shops there. I'm a budget clothing sort of gal and I've only seen one knick knack I half wanted. I'm in it for the food.

The International Tea Shop has assured me it will serve apple pie and sausage rolls. They've also banned the use of cucumber. I have absolutely noooooooooooooooooooo idea why

*whistles innocently*

A mini-Robills that just sells the cheap and interesting paper lampshades. If there is call for another mini-Robills to sell just the tacky plastic flowers that was their other best seller before they were bulldozed, someone else will need to suggest it

Top of my head.... Brixton needs a really decent fancy dress shop, the town centre needs an old skool fish and chippy, and actually an old skool several things.

A home brew shop selling ingredients, equipment, chemicals and homebrew beer, cider, perry, or mead sold straight from the keg. Bring your own container.

Agreed on the sausage rolls. They can't expand into Scotch eggs though as they are making a revival in some places

Also the caff would need to do a good lasagne and chips (apologies if this has been mentioned elsewhere in the thread).
