What DVD / Video did you watch last night? (pt3)

The Bogart/Bacall The Big Sleep and The Long Goodbye with Elliott Gould give two different takes that are definitely worth catching. (Mind you, I'd watch Bogart and Bacall read a phone book.)
How you seen the Mitchum Big Sleep? oh my gawd...it's...wrong.

That phone conversation with B&B swapping the phone between them, one of the greatest and sexiest scenes ever recorded.

The Angry Silence. Anti-union piece of shit starring Dickie Attenborough. Bernard Lee also in a supporting role (as is compulsory for that era) as a shop steward

The man who shot Liberty valance. Enjoyed this, but was very distracted when watching it

Rocky. Hadn’t seen it before. Surprisingly little boxing in it, I enjoyed the glimpses into his life in Philadelphia which looked tough and distinctly unglamorous.

Fall. A 2022 thriller film about two women climbers who after experiencing a traumatic event a year earlier, decide to climb the fourth tallest structure in the US, a derelict communications antenna.

It’s actually alright if not great. It’s no spoiler to say that things will go wrong for them during the climb. I was sceptic as to whether the script would be able to make an engaging story out of that for the duration of a feature film (how many different things can go wrong when climbing a metal pole, right?), but to the writers credit, though only after allowing some suspension of disbelief, they manage to deliver a sufficiently engaging story.

Bonus points for their production values. Instead of going for green screen, which would have been kind of expected given most of the film is set atop a 300- metre structure, they chose to build a small antenna and place it near a clifftop, which results in an impressive and realistic cinematography.

Second viewing of Everything Everywhere All at Once. One of those films so great and multilayered, you enjoy it and appreciate it the second time round even more than the first :)
Went to see it yesterday and really enjoyed it. Loved all the references and influences but it stands on its own as a remarkable piece of cinema. That's the kind of multiversing that Doctor Strange missed out on.

The only disappointment as usual was fellow cinema goers who remained mute throughout. Do miss audiences in London (sometimes)!

Where are you based?

Most of the film 633 Squadron until I got annoyed with my speakers. Not sure I will bother finishing it. Decent flying scenes but wooden acting.

Bad times at El Royal - never watched this as I’d seen a lot of bad /medium reviews however no worse than Tarantinos’s Hatefull 8 tbh . Interesting plot reaches a dead end with the arrival of the bad guy and inevitable stand off. A little more black humour , fleshing the roles out and more interplay between the characters plus a a few more twists would have made this but overall a good yarn and enjoyable .
I felt like rewatching this last night, so I did even thought I had to pay for it. Still stands up well, and whilst not perfect, and arguably being 15-20 more minutes longer than it should have been, it remains a pretty decent, visually striking flick with a brilliant character cast.

Hmm I have that recorded. I’ll have to give it a go
Do. Not amazing but absolutely not crap either. Great production values. The hotel where the entire film takes place was a rather expensive purpose-built soundstage mimicking (to some degree) a real hotel once owned by Frank Sinatra. And anyway, Jeff fucking Bridges :)

Loved up - mid 90s bbc drama about a young woman (Lena Headey) exchanging a chaotic home life for the pills and thrills of the London club scene. Very much in the mood of human traffic with some social commentary on the side. Great soundtrack (leftfield etc) and some nice shots of London as it was before it became like any other global city. Some early appearances of various well known British actors

I vaguely recall this originally being a bbc schools programme (minus the shagging scenes)

After seeing quite a few scathing reviews (though by no means shared by all critics) about Bullet Train, I was expecting a monumental turd. But it wasn’t anywhere near as bad as I had feared. It is nowhere near as clever as it think it is, but still quite entertaining and funny overall.

Worth a punt if you don’t have to pay for it and like silly Guy Ritchie-style action crime comedies of a weekend. Absolutely do not watch if the previous sentence doesn’t apply to you.

Got half way through the very cheesy but fun Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo then the stream crashed

Noticed that this character seems to have perhaps been a visual inspiration for Borat

Street of Shame, byMizoguchi. better this time even than any other time i've watched it.
went on from there to Sisters Of The Gion, which was ham-handed by comparison and i didn't finish it.

Not in the Apple TV+ thread because I don't have ATV+. Yar.

A friend wore me down and got me to watch For All Mankind. Much as I love space stuff - especially realistic space stuff - it sounded dry and I'd avoided it.
Silly me.
Definitely one of my new favourites. There's a bit of a change in pace between S1 and S2, where stuff starts to "happen" more and at the same time the alternative timeline goes from "yes, quite plausible" to "I'm not so sure it would play out that way" but I think the former makes up for the latter. Most importantly, it brings out some of the wonder I had as a child about the Moon program and everything that came after. Yes, the military does stick their noses in but it's about the people who are doing it for the science, to be first, to explore. For all mankind. I love how Margo gets her job, what happens to Gordo, etc, etc more than I love watching the big rockets take off. Which is a fair bit.
