I suspect I just will never get Dylan.
Mind you, I used to think that about Autechre, UK garage, Coil and dubstep. Love them all now.

I tried to listen to an album yesterday as planning to see the film next week. Found it very hard to get into. Maybe it needs a specific vibe as I was playing it while working

what album?

if you want instant ease of access, so to speak, Blood on The Tracks is a good place to start. And then work your way back through all the albums before that.

Blood on teh Tracks Would be a good prep for that film.

It was that one actually, chosen as Hollis had done a thread on it recently

It was kind of ok, but I would certainly not rush to relisten. Perhaps if I was sitting listening to it with a glass of wine with no distractions it might make more sense.

this is triggering for me.
Apologies. I’m used to being into music no one else likes so have made peace with the fact that we all have different ears and different expectations when it comes to music. I read that we have such a deep emotional connection to music, that listening to music we don’t like can trigger a raw emotional nerve that gives us an almost visceral reaction. You don’t really get such responses in literature

I think vibe is a big factor when it comes to music. It can change the way you percieve it for sure. As evinced by the popularity of godawful Euro holiday hits.
I wish I could recall the title of the one other Dylan song that I loved when I heard it - a mate was playing it on Worldwide on a Sunday afternoon and had been playing a blinder. I didn’t clock it was Dylan at all, even when he started singing, just thought it was a funky little live performance from the 60s. Was astounded when he told us who it was at the end of play. Was impressed by the musicianship, especially the harmonica playing and the drumming. His band at the time were as tight as the J.B.’s

Could be 100s

Remember any of lyrics or what it was about?

shot in teh dark:

and this early clip of Hard Rain will be good prep for that film.

I am not able to watch videos while working (as in I can’t concentrate on either work or the video!) but have listened to this and a best of album this afternoon. I do feel these greatest hits can be a bit of a copout as it’s really just the songs you already know plus a few I might not. I probably like him enough to own a greatest hits but not the individual albums!

I would say I know Dylan more as a songwriter and his work performed by others. Also we sang Blowing in the Wind at primary school assemblies (changing to blowing in your wind like the silly kids we were!). I also feel his style of music works best live

Best of does not even get close. The choices are always weird. Try the bootleg series Volume 1, first disk:

i reckon this one.

i remember you saying your like literature. listen to the skill of the writing in that song.

It’s not that one nor the one with The Band - it’s a live concert recording - I think at an outdoor festival. So it could be from his work with The Band. Isn’t there a Scorsese doc that follows them touring? Could be from that (not seen it)

Only possible if I Google the lyrics and read along:

“When she said, "Don't waste your words, they're just lies"
I cried she was deaf
And she worked on my face until breaking my eyes
And saying "What else you got left?"
It was then that I got up to leave
But she said, "Don't forget
Everybody must give something back
For something they get"
I stood there and hummed, I tapped on her drum
I asked her how come
And she buttoned her boot, and straightened her suit
And she said, "Don't be cute"
So I forced my hands in my pockets
And felt with my thumbs
And gallantly handed her my very last piece of gum
She threw me outside, I stood in the dirt
Where everyone walked
And, when finding out I'd forgotten my shirt
I went back and knocked
I waited in the hallway, she went to get it
And I tried to make sense
Out of that picture of you in your wheelchair
That leaned up against
Her Jamaican rum, and when she did come
I asked her for some
She said, "No, dear", I said, "Your words are not clear
You'd better spit out your gum"
She screamed till her face got so red
Then she fell on the floor
And, I covered her up and then went and looked through her drawer
And when I was through, I filled up my shoe
And brought it to you
And you, you took me in, you loved me then
You never wasted time
And I, I never took much, I never asked for your crutch
Now don't ask for mine”

Humble verdict: 🤷
I confess I rarely connect with poetry much either. Most of it just washes over me.

Anyway, why Dylan when there’s Arthur Russell. He’s one of the few singer/songwriters I connect to. Damn good cello player and disco producer too.
Yes, I am comparing him to Dylan. :D
