What do you buy at the airport?

Cloo

Banana for scale
Flying to France tomorrow, and was reflecting on how my family and I have stuff we 'traditionally' buy at the airport.

Of long habit, I buy a trashy women's magazine to read on the flight, and an easy puzzle book (usually Kriss Kross) to do while travelling or if sitting by a beach or the place we're staying in while chilling out.

Where there is a branch of Wasabi available, if it's an early morning flight, dorayaki are usually purchased for the family as breakfast - little pancake-y things filled with sweet bean or fruit paste.

Quite often sunglasses are purchased as it's not unsually for me to have lost/broken some recently.

I always buy a bottle of water per person for the flight since we can't take them through security. Otherwise normally just buy coffees and snacks maybe a paperback for the plane if I see one I fancy. The only significant exception I can remember is going to Salzburg, Mrs Q lost her wallet and I treated her to a fancy leather one in the duty free. She bought a pair of fancy sunglasses at East Mids once which she still has.

Water, mints (for take off), a paper (for news & the crossword) and some trashy “Take a Break” type mag for light relief. Mind you it’s been over 10 years since I’ve been on a plane. I have noticed that newsagents in both airports and railway stations seem to have a corner of their bookshelves devoted to S&M erotica. Always found it a bit weird.

In Santander I always buy a copy of Skipper, a Spanish boating magazine. It's the only place that has it.

Otherwise I don't buy much.

I try not to buy anything which isn't food/drink because airports are always a swizz and I prefer to travel light anyway.

But it's usually the one time I get a starbucks or costa, and if it's a long haul flight I might load up with snacks.

In the UK I buy a Boots meal deal with coconut water , packet of Reeces peanut butter cups , bottle of water , newspaper, and a pint of Guiness
From Portugal a hot chocolate and a bottle of water ( either make or buy a sandwich at a shop)

Going out not much apart from coffee and maybe a snack, returning usually some local booze and maybe chocolate to use up any local currency.

Our last trip was to Poland and we returned with 4 and a half bottles of flavoured Polish vodka!

I know quite a lot of people appreciate weirdly timed pints at the airport - though I don't want to booze before or during flights myself.

Me neither really unless it's free, and even then not bothered that much. However, coming back from Hanoi once (about 14 hours?) Liza and I shared 3 seats with a hairdresser from Southampton who was determined to drink, and insist we drink, the whole way. Liza passed out about halfway home so he just continued getting 3 beers and drinking 2 himself. I have never drank for so long in my life.

I try to buy as little as possible at the airport but there was a Christmas sale on at Gatwick last year and I got a lovely fur-lined hoodie/coat for £30. Trouble was I first tried on a medium, struggled into it, and embarrassingly couldn't get out of it. It was tiny. Chinese made with Chinese sizes. I needed XXL for the first time ever in my life. I weigh about 11 stone.

My last airport purchase was cetirizine, which I cannot do without, and had forgotten to pack.

WH Smith. 30 tablets. £11.00. Eleven quid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I usually buy a year's worth on Amazon, which costs £8.99 (I've just reordered them. 12 x 30 tablets, £8.99.).

I went through Frankfurt Airport in about 1988 and it had a sex shop, which I found odd. Odd enough to still remember it 35 years later.

As little as I can possibly get away with - Coffee, drink, bite to eat, depending.

Also bus ticket/transport pass when I arrive somewhere if they are on sale.

Breakfast and a pint on the way out.

Gin for me and duty free fags for my mate’s husband on the way home. Presents for the kids if they’re not with me. Toblerone for the husband if he isn’t.

Except when we go to Finland in December. I’ve been told booze is so expensive, and shops in such short supply, that I’ll get a bottle of gin on the way out.

Water, toblerone, and Viz.

It's become a tradition. I've been doing it for 30 years without crashing. There was no Viz or Toblerone at Balad, which is why we crashed.

Proper amateur hour stuff.

Last few holidays the duty free deals on spirits have been better on the way out then the way back. But it's not ideal to lug it round as you travel.

Last few holidays I've picked up a car from the airport on the other end. Which means no early beer which is a shame as the airport is one of the few places you get judged as hard for having a pint at 7.30 in the morning.

On the plus side Manchester Airport had places to fill empty water bottles once you are through security.
