VW T25 Horn advice please!

Bad news - My B-reg T25 has just failed it's MOT.

Good news - It only failed because the horn doesn't work! :)

I've got a free retest booked in next week, so I need to get it sorted pronto.

I pulled the button off the steering wheel to have a look at the connectors. They seemed fine.

I kind of thought that if the actual horn speaker worked, then touching the connectors together should make it beep. It didn't beep.

But then when I put the button back together - the horn started working again, about 50% of the time.

Now it seems to me that the button is at fault - is this right? why didn't the horn beep when I touched the wires together?

Any suggestions?

If you remove the horn from the electrical connectors and fit one of these you will pass your MOT!

tension on the wire when you had the button out ?

Maybe the wire's been under physical stress through being twisted with the wheel ?

i.e. fault at other end ...

mine does this also, but works 80% of the time.
if yours is like mine there's very little wire to play with at steering wheel end, so when you push it back it might be pulling it? if you've a soldering iron worth resoldering it.

presume you've checked wiring at the horn itself, underneath and behind front bumper, offside?

if you can't get it sorted you could borrow my steering wheel for the retest ;)

The most fun is to be had where the horn button is in the earth circuit and years of steering wears through the insulation. :D

I've brought the prised-out 'Horn Press' into work, where a mate has had it in bits and given it a good clean out - he reckons thats the problem.

As for why it didn't beep when I touched the connectors together - he reckons it would only beep if you *join* the connectors together - Perhaps the ends are insulated?

Anyway - We'll see. :)

Why not go down to Halfords and buy an air horn? They usually come with easy fit instructions and, if you get the right one, are seriously loud. I did this once and the tester almost had a heart attack when he tried it. As long as you are getting power to the compressor it will work.

Fiamm electric "snail" horns are pretty scary for a straight electric horn. I used to have one on my pushbike ! :D
