Virgin Media - Crap/Not Crap

Haha, mine is still maintaining it's 100MB since the 'test my line' btw for anyone that was following that.
I did it on mine the other day, didn't notice any change and was wondering if they just offer it as some kind of placebo.

However, testing just now, I'm getting 50mbps which is what I'm supposed to get. Recently have come to expect it to start dropping dramatically by this time of day. I'll see if it lasts.
 
Tested again at what should be peak time and I'm still getting a little over what I'm paying for.

First test only gave 15mbs then realised I hadn't turned on wifi. What nuts is my mobile data is way faster then my Internet in the last few places I've lived.

Mine is up to what it should be too. And a Virgin engineer is coming round. Perhaps the two things are connected.
 
Virgin have accepted that there is a capacity problem in my area and given me a £25 discount this month.

They said it would be fixed by 21 December. They have just updated this to 29 March 2017 :rolleyes:
 
What did you need to do to get that?

I kicked up a fuss on the Virgin forum (actually tagged onto someone else's thread) and posted my hub stats. They accepted there was a problem and sent an engineer round. He checked there was nothing wrong with my setup and so they authorised a credit.

I''m about to do the same, althugh i'll be askng for a discount until the review date, or asking to go on the 50mb packag (as I can't get anywhere near 50mb at peak times anyway) and be put on the new customer price for it (£18 broadband only)

it's got so bad, sunday night i couldn't even get 1mb, soon as midnight passes its back to 100mb until 7pm when it goes to a crawl again, it's like clockwork, obviously they've applied somesort of QoS to my area.

it's made the press today (for London obviously) but you only have to look at the speed forum to see how it goes to shit literally everywhere once 7pm hits.

I'm paying far too much for my 70 megs though - especially since I never use more than a fraction.
Perhaps it would justify buying a new phone and availing myself of 4G ...

Depends how much data you use. 4g isn't cheap normally if it's more then a tiny bit.
 
phoned them last night and they confirmed high usage in my area at peak times, he said a ticket hadn't been logged for it so he logged one, as it was the first time i phoned, I gave him the benefit of the doubt and didn't ask for money off as it seemed a bit cheeky. After the call i signed up to speedtest so I can properly graph all my speedtests and export them to CSV and also signed up to thinkbroadband quality monitor.

Ended up being a 2 hour outage last night, so who knows if that is just coincidence or not, suppose I'll find out this evening, I'd have known abut the outage without the monitor as well due to me having IP cameras around he house that notify me when they've been offline for over 30 minutes and when they they come back on.

Virgin are currently doing an internet only deal, no phone line, for £18 a month for 12 months. Then it rises to £32 a month, so you need to ditch and switch after the 12 month contract.

I would post here first making out your an existing customer and find out if your area is in high utilization before signing up Speed - Virgin Media Community

If it is you'll get nowhere near 50mb in the evenings and weekends, probably more likely 1mb - 5mb.
 
Mysteriously they started sending me text messages last night, telling me they've "fixed the network problem" and asking if things are working fine.

They haven't though, I'm still getting about 1mb in the evenings.

However sometimes things seem slower then I expect. Is this likely to be Virgin or the website concerned?
 
Ime it's less likely to be QoS applied, and just outright contention on the local boxes. I'm on the 60Mb package, and generally only get close to that in the mornings or overnight. Peak time evenings it's ~5Mb max. Gave up trying to watch a short thing on Netflix the other day as it would only buffer 10-15 seconds and then stop, buffer, again.

Stuff streams fine, even high quality. It's the slight lag sometimes before a web page loads that's confusing. First world problem anyway. Been used to rural Internet most of my life.

I was on virgin 70mbs and I switched to BT 7mbs without noticing any difference when browsing the internet. The only noticeable difference is my torrents come down around 30% slower than they did with the 70mbs.
 
Do you have the Tivo box? If so, watch Netflix on that as that doesn't seem to be affected by the low bandwidth issues.

Start doing speed tests after 7pm in the evening connected the router, its always fine during the day, it's the evenings and weekends it goes to shit, It only really started happening to me about 4 weeks ago, my girlfriend lives a couple of miles away and in the same area code, but has none of the issues i'm currently having, so its strictly down to the cabs your going through.
 
I'd rather have a consistent 10mbps than a daytime 50mbs / evening 1-2mbps which is what I consistently get at the moment. At that rate audio streams (internet radio etc) are just about ok, although they drop out sometimes. Streaming video is a gamble, sometimes works with occasional buffering, sometimes basically unusable.
 
I can't believe how appalling this sounds. What contention ratio do you get with a Virgin account? And what sort of traffic shaping do they impose?
