Virgin Media - Crap/Not Crap

I recently switched to Three for my mobile as I went SIM only. It's significantly worse then EE so I'd be pretty reluctant to have all my home devices on mobile broadband.

It seems a deal for what it is though.

I had to push quite hard for it and it took a couple of calls. Be quite direct with them and have an equivalent deal to e.g. vodafone if they are in your area to hand.

It's the same for me, in my area. I did run a 5G hub with EE though, which was great when it worked. But did have a tendency to cut out randomly in the end.

Well that was easier then I thought it would be. I got £27 for 100 Mbs with no haggling. I spent ages on the phone last time and couldn't get it that low. I guess they must be losing customers.

No FTTP here at the moment. When I was looking at uswitch I see talk talk offer 150mbs (although on clicking on their site we can't get it). Is that delivered via BT FTTP?

I'd have thought so, my mate recently had them cable up his while also haggling with Virgin, and basically used them both over 14 days to decide which one to bin during cool off period. He kept Virgin. Now at least the house is cabled up for both VM/Openreach if he ever decides to switch.

Looks like new customers can get VM 100Mbps for £24 a month at the moment, so they probably took the extra £3 a month as a win win.

BT FTTP is mega expensive in comparision

I'm currently paying £32 a month for 70Mbps though FTTC, and that was the 'new customer' price. I thought I'd miss my 300Mbps virgin when I moved, but I'm not really noticing it, just the price I'm paying for half the speed is ridiculous. Don't knock VM until you move to an area where you can't get it!!!

They were no where near as up haggling last time, so it's a win for me as well. As I said I'm happy enough with them that I'd be pretty hesitant to switch. I don't know at what point the speed becomes noticeable, I dropped from 200Mbps to 100Mbps last time to save money and don't really notice it, but they are consistent and it's very rare I see my internet slow down, normally when I check it's just over 100.

I know this thread is mainly about home broadband, but I'm a bit concerned about the forthcoming merger between Virgin and o2.

I'm with o2, who I've found excellent (been with them for over 20 years) but I hope their customer service isn't dragged down to Virgin levels.

Is internet via 5g going to gradually make fibre redundant then? The claimed speeds seem similar.

So far I've found 5g on my phone (Three mobile) to be quite rubbish - whenever a 5g signal pops up it seems to be a worse connection than usual.

I moved from Virgin to EE and EE is miles better, for a start wifi calling works on any device; with Virgin, it is only available if you buy the device from Virgin. Also, I fucking loathe Virgin for screwing me whilst I was in hospital having cancer surgery.

Likely not in metro areas because mobile spectrum is relatively long range, shared and costs carriers money, and wifi s is shared in a much smaller area and the spectrum is free.

think about how far you are from the EE cell site, you are sharing the same spectrum with everyone in whatever the radius of the site is. Then think about how many wifi APs there are in the same area.

in less populated areas it’ll definitely have its place

I think it's still wildly patchy - my 5G (z2 south london) is faster than my fibre, I get about 400Mbps on 5G, but if I go up to the park a couple hundred metres away it's about the same as 4G.

Glad you got it sorted. They were also much easier for me last year and I think there is more competition now. I'll get a cashback offer up with BT and ring them later in the month.

They can't really push faster speeds to me as I can already download a game/whole playlist in 1-10 minutes so what more do I really need? Or anyone for that matter unless you're gaming online and downloading massive files all the time.

Well , just had an interesting chat via the website.

I am late paying my bill ( im always late but this time im 2 months late :D ).

I asked for an extension and not be cut off until 6/8/2021 , was told I could only get an extension until 27/7/21 , I said I don't think I can pay it by then and may need to change supplier.

They then came back and said we have put an extension on until 6/9/2021 ???

I'm not complaining, just a bit baffled :D

well an update, the fuckers have only gone and cut me off after they said they wouldnt , they really are a bunch of fuckers and trying to get through to them is a nightmare

I am leaving Virgin media!

I've been with them for 20 + years and just have evening and weekend land line calls and broadband.

My last bill was nearly £70 -that included the 3 phone calls made from the land line.
I did a comparison and a friend of mine reccomended NOW TV, who are doing unlimited landline calls and broadband for £18 per month for 12 months.

The virgin retention team kept phoning me but I said to them that unless they were able to match the new offer then they needed to let me go and stop phoning me. After all why wouldn't I go to a different provider that could save me £50 per month? They couldn't really argue with that.....

They bang on about their super fast broadband....that apparently I ve been using but its not that good, always cutting out.

Not sure how much ours is thesedays but I think it might be due for reviewing.

One of the things that I think about when considering changing is that Virgin have never mithered about downloading/torrenting/using Kodi etc. Never had a warning letter or anything.

Is that something other providers do or am I worrying unnecessarily?

Oh balls! NOW TV engineer can not get to where he needs to be because of the extensive brambles in my front garden. I guess I'll be dealing with that this week then.

That's interesting because the only people i know who have actually received letters mithering about torrent downloads were on VM.

BT have never sent any letters to me, assuming I'd do such a thing...

I had a fair few emails like this from PlusNet. That's all though, they never actually did anything about it. I'm now with the lovely Zen who apparently give even less fucks about copyright trolls.

Well.....the change over is not going well.....
I've just had a conversation with NOW TV and put it to them that perhaps if they highlighted reasons for failed engineer installation visits, such as in my case brambles barring the point of access.....then it would have been something I could have sorted out over the weekend in preparation. It's just a massive waste of time otherwise.
They have asked me to choose dates next week to try again. I can only do the 28th and have said that if they can't meet that then I'll be staying with Virgin.
