Virgin Media - Crap/Not Crap

4g is fast enough for me where Iive. It's just data caps. I do some torrenting, but nowhere near as much as I used to, so I could probably work with that.

I've not looked but guessed unlimited 5g would be expensive as people will use it drop home broadband.

The EE plan I'm on is 'unlimited' (but really with a fair use policy of 1000GB or 1TB)

I don't ever go over 500GB a month so I'm ok. The 5G makes no difference, it'll connect to any compatible device. I just don't want to shell out for a 5G router because I have nothing which needs those speeds. The truth is, they're not pushing any unlimited data only deals - thats why I have a 'phone' deal that includes unlimited data (and also unlimited minutes and texts but I'll basically never use them).

I'm waiting for 5g to cut the cord because the 4g network round here is overloaded and craps out whenever it's rush hour or there are loads of people in the bars. Slows to a crawl.

so Im meant to be getting 350 Mb/s , only getting 180 so did a web chat to get assistance, who ever was working on my issue then made my connection slow down to 80 Mb/s , so called again to be told my hub was faulty and they would send me a new one, a free wifi booster and 9 quid a month off my bill.

New hub turned up 4 days early, no wifi booster and now only back up to 180 M/b , ordered new cables and a new nic to see if its an issue with my pc , if not back on the phone again...

Ah I need to add to this , after downloading some games I could see I was getting faster than above speeds , thought hmm... used the Speedtest web app rather than the windows app and boom , getting around 368mb/s

Time for the annual virgin media price rise email. Andddddddd

no price increase as virgin media try to show they care. Awwwww. Bless.

Crap Crap Crap

Has been up and down all day today and has been patchy for the last week. Have tried to call but almost impossible to speak to anyone.

Cunts

I had a random call from Truespeed the other day, lovely bloke, they are based in Bath and are using the gov broadband grant to get fibre to the door, you sign up, and when there is enough interest they get you to confirm, when you have they get the money from the government which pays for the line installation to the door. So free install and about £40 for guaranteed 200Mpbs down AND up. Only downside is that I'm on the list and they will get to us in about 6-12 months.

I’m moving house soon and won’t be able to get virgin broadband. It’s making me nauseous if I’m honest. I’ve got used to these 200mbps speeds.

Provided you get a fast data speed in your area, I really can't recommend highly enough looking into 4G/5G routers on an unlimited data plan if you really want to cut to cord from Virgin and any other ADSL alternative.

Debating if I should try this over BT fibre but don’t really want to get myself into a long term deal that might not work out if it’s terrible.

ETA: can’t get 3 mobile broadband at new location either. Joys of moving out to the sticks.

I have thought about this.
Partly because I sometimes want to travel with decent broadband when working away at events but mainly because Virgin is the only (viable/decent speeds) option here. Virgin are expensive, erratic and have appalling customer service so would love to dump them. Also would be nice to move house with portable broadband in the future.

Thing is that I have a couple of laptops running for work and also (more importantly) my big telly runs things like Plex/Netflix etc which is a bit hungry on the speeds. I have a Three mobile which is okay round here (Hertfordshire) but only 2/3 bars usually :hmm:

I got the same approach about a year ago
Never heard from the company again

It's very handy just being able to plug the router into any available power socket at home, or away. I also use Netflix/Plex etc. Probably have about 10 things connected at any one time.

The key thing you want to measure is that you don't exceed any fair use on 'unlimited' deals. For me I'm on EE 'unlimited' which is actually 1TB fair use. Even with a fair bit of streaming of Netflix, live TV, youtube etc. It barely reaches over 400GB of use in a month.

Also, not a bad idea to test the signal speed of a provider with Speedtest on your mobile first before investing in a router. IME Three were pretty bad on speed. Hence testing with EE who were much better and significantly faster than Virgin.

That is good to hear

Although my personal phone is Three I have just picked up a work phone which I will probably put on EE. Might be useful to have an EE phone contract to test the reception and also useful for haggling with the router :hmm:

If moving about with said router the 5G coverage might be an issue I guess?
Mind you the current UK 4G broadband is hardly world beating (34th iirc?)

Just checked EE and there is no 5G router offer in my yard:
You can get a maximum speed of 36Mb/s

I'd go with a 4G router anyway. I use a Huawei B-535 and have clocked speeds of 148Mpbs down/56Mbps up with EE on unlimited data plan.

Unless you really need 5G speeds, I'd say it's overkill (and most of the 5G routers are over £300 anyway)

Eurgh. And now VM are trolling me by telling me I can now get 1gig fibre at my current place.

That is, until you can't and they have a blackout and twitter erupts with angry home workers :D

Also, there comes a point surely that this becomes surplus to requirement, and what would really way more useful, is faster upload speeds, lower latency, not being tied to a cable sticking through the wall, or restricted to an area they've bothered to cable up. i.e. 4G or 5G.

its when you watch a 12GB patch for a game come down at 160mbps and realise, shit. my maximum speed in the new place won’t even be half that.

Will have to do a better job of keeping an eye out for those because they’ll be no watching it download. More like go to bed and play in the morning.

I feel bad for those buying the new digital only edition of the PS5 tomorrow only to find their kids won't be able to play any games while the servers go into complete meltdown as everyone tries to purchase and download games.

Still a bit crap. Did have some easy success with them today though as my "deal" was running out and would have gone up by £10, but I'm now paying £7 less than I was already so that's okay. Was going to switch to BT Fiber which was the same price with £120 cashback on top, but still didn't work out as cheap. Their appraoch still fucks me off though as it's clearly exploitive in a lot of ways. I dread to think what my parents are paying.

What are people generally paying for what at the moment?

Mine is £27 a month for 54Mbps (which we generally seem to get) and they are offering an upgrade to 108Mbps for about the same price. Should I haggle?

I'm not actually that bothered about the download speed which rarely seems to be an issue... more interested in increasing the upload speed now that I have various online backups and things running.

I'm out of contract again and it's up to to £45 for a 100meg. I've really no complaints about the service but am going to negotiate anyway. Who's been through this and what have you managed? I'm going to use Talktalk and Plusnet doing 72mb for £25. Not expecting them to drop that far but I guess it's a good opener.

£45 is ridic cost for internet.

UnderAnOpenSky Not sure of your location/coverage but Three are currently doing a 5G hub with average download speeds of 100Mbps for £30pm AND are throwing in a free 43" LG telly.

Good thing about 5G hubs too is you can place the router pretty much anywhere you want as long as you have a power socket.
