Virgin Media - Crap/Not Crap

I just called them as I'd received an email recently saying the price was going up another £2.99/month and without any hassle at all I got the price dropped from £38.99 (soon to be £41.98) down to £30/month. Also being sent a newer modem.

Result! :)

I made the call as well. Also got it dropped to just over £30, annoyingly only till December, then I have to play the game again. Most frustrating.

Going through the usage Ive used 340GB this month and the average is 80. I really must try harder.

UPDATE

So I've just got back to the UK, and.....I now have working Virgin Media Internet, and a Tivo box installed  the phone I'm still waiting for but that'll apparently be fixed on Wednesday. I feel like I've been propelled back to the 21st Century again. 100Mbish down, and 7Mbish up? Not sure if I can be doing anything to be optimizing performance, but there it is. Things seem to be working... for now.

Now need to play the game of what compensation is going to be offered for taking over 4 months to install. Funtimes.

It truly was like stepping in the 21st century for me, especially as I've never really had what could be considered decent broadband. When they threatened the recent price rise it made me scratch my head about I would actually do if they didn't back down. It's not really missed a beat in almost a year, so I'd be very reluctant to change it.

I guess I'm lucky, I've had Cable since it got laid in Birmingham, about 20 years ago now. Only once been on ADSL since when I moved and couldn't get cable. When I moved again, it became part of the house checklist that it was in a cabled area. :D

It was certainly on my list when I was looking to buy! Although before Iived in beautiful places in National Parks so it's swings and roundabouts! :D

Everything seems to be running suspiciously smoothly... :hmm: various speedtests and torrenting, even on a Sunday, and no complaints thus far.

Also, I've finally resolved my long running complaint over the 4 month delay in installing the service and after a bit of back and forth with the complaints dept trying to see if I could get a new V6 box or some movies or sport thrown in as goodwill for all the hassle, in the end I accepted a credit of just over £100 on the account. This is in addition to the £50 referral credit I already had and the rolling discount which already brings the price down to under £16/month. So in reality I'm only going to pay around £7.50/month for 100Mb broadband with a TiVo thrown in which isn't bad.

The TiVo however is disappointingly slow at running Netflix/Youtube etc. I'll stick to the native app on the Smart TV for this. However it's good to have for series linking recordings and Match Of The Day etc. The design of the remote is whack too.

It's also shit if your on the basic package as all the channels you don't pay for are just greyed out and there is no way to not show then.

We decided we didn't need TV anyway and disconnected the box. When I was renegotiating the contract after recent price rises I was quite surprised to find its slightly cheaper to get all 3 services over broadband. I was hoping for further savings to enable me to justify getting 200mb, not that I actually need it.

It's actually reassuring to see that the shows on most of the premium channels are, in my opinion, utter toss which I wouldn't pay for anyway. I wouldn't mind some of the movie channels if offered but seriously 90% of the rest are of no interest whatsoever. It's really the recording and EPG function of the TiVo which is most useful to me. Just a shame it's a bit laggy.

I've been trying to work out how I can cut down on my VM costs, by going BB only, but actually by the time I've bought a now tv sub and a recorder box, it works out the same price.

Just torrent everything you'd use Now TV for...

Although as I found there really appears to be little difference in price once you start pushing them

Does anyone know about getting virgin media tivo box to output to a second tv?

I've been considering buying a second hand slingbox solo, and then hoping I can find a kodi client for it, but would like to know if anyone else has had any luck before wasting the money

Drat. I've had it a year and the slipped back up without me noticing. It's because it was only a few months back I had to renegotiate because of their prices rises. Time to tell them I'm leaving again.

Anyone had to do this recently and what offers from elsewhere did you quote?

I keep meaning too, and still haven't. Got a week off w/c 27th Nov and going to sort this out and my 3 contract.

I was just going to go on money saving expert and what not and see what the current best deals were and quote I was going to one of those.

I wonder how many times you can play the game with them? It's an extra £15 a month, so quite a considerable hike. Be a bugger if they say no as it's been rock solid and nobody else does those kind of speeds round here.

This may sound stupid, but it may be worth waiting for Black Friday week!

I only say that as had an email from 3, to register interest in their Black Friday deals, so I'm hoping they have a nice whopping SIM only deal for the same price I'm paying now.

It will probably just be shitty handsets that aren't actually a good deal, but we shall see.

Just logged into my Virgin Media account as was just looking up price comparisions to phone them up and try and get it cheaper and I was greeted with the we're ready to upgrade you to 200Mb for free. Haven't had any communication about this, so obviously I clicked proceed.

The conundrum now, is that I'm actually getting 200Mb for cheaper than new customers do anyway, all be it only by £3.

I'm a fair dude, and not someone that picks gripes or is a knob for the sake of being a knob, so now I feel guilty about phoning them up and asking for a cheaper price!

The closest is TalkTalk (who we all know are shite and I wouldn't realistically go to anyway) who can offer 76Mb at £27.50 a month, so would be a saving of about £10 a month if they price matched.

I only have Broadband from VM, no other services, so am now on a 200Mb package for £37. Appreciate I could probably get TV thrown in for next to nothing, but honestly, I don't want it. The only thing I can throw at them was the high utilisation issues that started this time last year and lasted about 6 months, which for them, is a quick fix! I did receive a discount while this was on going. Other than that I've never had a problem with the service in 7 years here and they also upgraded my router for free (if you can call the SH3 an upgrade) during those problems.

So, I kind of feel I'm being a dick if I phone them up pretending to be a knob that's going to leave a relatively rock solid service for the well known shitty network of TalkTalk for the sake of £10. Sky Fibre also 76Mb would be about £9 a month cheaper, AFTER, I've done all the cash back crap!

Is anyone else getting 200Mb for less than £37 if you're happy to reveal how much your paying?

But are you *actually* getting 200Mb? When I left Virgin I was on a 100Mb package iirc and at best I got 50Mb (which I was happy with). The problem was the 5Mb at peak times (most evenings).

We have the cheapest 200mb package, we generally get about 70mb, which I'm not too bothered about as it still supports five devices streaming easily. But it might be nice to have what they claim.

It will take a couple days for the 200Mbps to go live, but yeah, I get 150Mbps or there abouts even at peak times when wired and generally over 100Mbps on wireless.

Appreciate now isn't peak, this is on wireless, router is upstairs

I think when he was first cabled it was just 'Birmingham Cable' and they probably did a better job than the majority of the country when it came to laying fibre networks and before it got took over by Telewest and then VM

I've still not made that call. Job for today maybe. I was paying £35 for 100mbs, TV and Phone. Although the TV and Phone made it cheaper bizarrely, not fussed by it. Its just jumped up to £50. I might throw in your exeriance actually when I phone them. I'd be happy to pay £37 for 200mbs, although not sure I properly use 100mbs. :D

Very rare mine drops below 100mbs, in fact most of the time in reports a little bit over. Just checked and its at 109mbs, which is the fastest I've seen it.

Sounds like you're getting a good deal tbh...... I'm £52 a month for basic tv package, 100 meg and phone (I think, I can't actually log on to the site right now).

Log into MyVirginMedia, you might have an unexpected free upgrade message waiting for you!

Good luck, I'm having a great day, upgraded my SIM only on Three to 12GB of data for an extra £1 a month (with netflix SD and apple music amongst others not using any data allowance) and even got through to the quacks on the first attempt. I might buy a lottery ticket.

Just had a look, I pay £55.99...... I could have sworn it was £52, but obviously you can't look at any older bills apart from your most current....

wankers.

How much do you pay for that?
