I'm a bit out of touch, but hasn't this been building for a while since Nkurunziza decided to go for a third term? I'd assume there's a strong ethnic element to this (as in similar situations in Burundi over the decades). Grim stuff.

It was based on a few people I follow on twitter from Africa and things they posted over the last few days. I've looked it up and he does seem to have been sworn in and has been filmed signing a condolence book.
