Veganism, new and old Vegans, info, support and recipes

If you're wanting tofu for stir fries don't use fresh tofu out of the supermarket. Get the bags of ready fried tofu from the fridge section of your local oriental supermarket. Not expensive and ready to marinate straight away. It looks like this:

It's called 'dou bao' (dou rhymes with toe, bao rhymes with cow) if you need to ask for it.

The standard recipe for the fresh stuff in china involves pouring a load of pork mince over the top which you lot wouldn't like.

I never do 8ball. I leave it to marinate in fridge overnight in soy, garlic and a splash of oil. I like it fried as well but for some reason whatever wok ive had it sticks like a bastard. If you freeze it, it also has a different more solid texture i find.

Flat non stick frying pan on medium heat helps, then add it whatever is in the wok.

Or deep fry it.

Never deep fried it but have a non stick pan which I fry it in first. Leave to one side then fry my mountain of beansprouts etc then add near end to warm through. Might try a tempura batter and deep fry.

Thanks both, will look for oat milk next time I'm shopping. I did wonder whether the curdling was something to do with temperature... do you have to keep nut milks in the fridge - I have been but they are not refrigerated in the shop so I guess they don't need it?
So yeah, if I leave the tea to cool down a bit then it doesn't curdle hardly. But I also got some oat milk and I think that's definitely the nicest on its own (I love porridge so makes sense lol) and second best in tea after cashew. And since the supermarket near me does own brand, meaning it's half the price of the alpro cashew, I reckon it's the winner :)

I've never had it curdle in tea, only coffee

Not sure lupins are vegan.. :hmm:
"Lupin (also spelled lupine) is a legume belonging to the same plant family aspeanuts. Lupin beans are a traditional food in Mediterranean cuisine. Lupin beans are eaten whole and also used to make ingredients such as lupin flour and lupin protein."

Im not vegan or even vegetarian, but that burger looks and sounds well lush!

it's nice but a bit spicy for me, i am a spice lightweight tho
If you've got anymore send them over i love spice! Spicier the better.

Which reminds me of the funniest thing that happened to me this year, considering Cardiff's current problems. Was on the Hayes with a dear friend and she announces rather loudly, " i need to go to the cashpoint in case i want to by some spice later" (we were on our way to that herb/spice stall in market) Oh how I roared!

Seen lots of people on this thread talking about pressing tofu between two plates etc etc.

My mates invented a tofu press that may be of interest.

Cool, thought these must have already existed (dumb bell and frying pan in my case). I’m still not sure whether it should be pressed after marinading to remove any sogginess but the second experiment was more successful.

Just been to Lidl on the strength of your post but they're out of it down here. I'm assuming 'while stocks last' means that'll be the end of it.
I missed out on it last time. Went the day after I was told about it. They're getting organic tofu in on Thursday. Two 200g blocks for £1.49.
Will report back on the one I got today. You may well have dodged a bullet yet. I don't like the pre marinated cauldron one as it's too salty.

Aldi have sweet potato burgers and beetroot burgers, both at £1.49, made by 'Great Food' if you're feeling lazy and can't be bothered to make something yourself. Probably go for twice that in Waitrose.

Not a vegan but I’d definitely look out for those. Sound lush.
