Variety act in blackface on Australian TV

And that relates to the presence or absence of racism in London how?

Some parts of the world have very different cultures and aren't as tolerant as we are here. We can't expect incomers to understand that immediately though it'd be wrong for them not to try.

Some of the more recent arrivals take a bit of time to learn our ways but they tend to get there in the end.

If you'd just turned up in Bethnal Green from Somalia or Swaziland I expect you'd experience a bit of culture shock too.

Or the like you, the 18th century.

I've got a good idea for one. Let's call it "Spot the White Racist".

Everyone gets to play. On one team you have the "taxpayers" who all chip in a chunk of their earnings every month so that the other team, the "diversity officers" can earn inflated salaries and live extremely comfortable lives trying to ruin other (white) people's reputations.

You're Sasha Baron Cohan trying out a new character, and I claim my $5.

We aren't talking about other parts of the world. We're talking about the presence or absence of racism in London.

I don't think anyone has done anything to ruin 'other white people's reputations'?

Surely turning up on tv dressed as they did means they did it to themselves? Unless they were coerced into appearing like that?

This particular game is played in Britain. They don't play it in Australia, thankfully. People are much more relaxed about racial matters there.

It was a bit of a song and a dance. Loosen up. Aussie culture is different. They're all 'racist'. Laughing bantering 'racists'

Haven't had a chance to read this thread yet and am likely about to lose my internets for the night, so I'll just jump in and suggest that the fuckwits on the programme (for once, I've seen it!) were absolutely, staggeringly cunts of, if not quite the highest order, then certainly firmly ensconced in the top half of the table.

What the fuck were they thinking?? What was the TV channel thinking??

I doubt I'll need it, but just in case, remind me never to go to Australia.

FFS.

The thing I thought was really interesting about the apology is that that the presenter apologised to Harry Connick Jr personally, which sort of missed the point.

It sounded like most of the audience were really angry and upset, they were booing, they didn't get an apology.

All the people who watched it on TV and were upset and angry they didn't get an apology.

It felt like he just apologised to HCJ because he represented Americans, which by association felt like they were saying that Australians just didn't have the intelligence or emotional sophistication to appreciate how disgustingly racist it was.

Not sure what I think about that. How did it get on the show in the first place if there isn't at least an element of that in the predominant culture (and there does seem to be one, by most accounts), that of course does not extend to all individuals?

NOt getting involved in the bunfight and no intention of implying that all Australians are racist (some of my best friends are racist*), but 6 guys and not one of them even thought , "hey this is err, a bit shit, and not really funny".

Not one person in the TV crew thought "what are we actually supposed to be laughing at here?"

Quite a few morons involved in the making of that clip then?

*figure it out.

didn't want to start a new thread for this, but heres some apparently well-meaning blackface

I don't even know. Its just still not right is it, and no matter how good the make up artist is (and this is a cut above some B&W minstrels crudity) it still seems off to me. Surely their are other ways to raise awareness that don't involve blacking up ffs.

I only found out recently, courtesy of Aziz Ansari's Master of None, that the main guy in Short Circuit 2 wore brownface. WTF Fisher Stevens.
