US Senate passes sweeping climate, tax and healthcare package

The bill seeks to lower the cost of medicines, increase corporate taxes and reduce carbon emissions.

The bill, a product of 18 months of intense wrangling, passed by a margin of 51 to 50 on Sunday with Vice-President Kamala Harris casting the deciding vote. It was previously blocked by two Democratic senators who shared Republican concerns about its cost.

The authors of the bill say it will cut the country's carbon emissions by 40% by 2030.

The action on climate comes as the US experiences a wave of extreme weather, including a recent heatwave as well as deadly flooding in Kentucky that left dozens dead. President Biden visited flood-damaged areas of the state on Monday.

It is a much smaller bill than Biden had initially proposed but the climate parts are important and could signpost ways that China and India could follow.

the loons are going on about the fact the IRS is hiring 87000 armed agents they aren't https ://www.reuters.com/article/factcheck-irs-armed-idUSL1N2ZT296 the IRS does have a law enforcement wing that's armed but even the Department of Education has armed agents they deal with serious organised fraud.

The Way the US police system works it's cheaper and more effective for a federal agency to fly its own team around the country to takedown of someone than expect to get cooperation from a local police force or even the FBI. So you end up with lots of federal departments having door kickers or just the shear size of the US and letting everyone have guns Hence NASA have a swat team and the National Park service have tactical teams.
