This make me laugh a bit.
I dont think this giant events venue is doing much good for London clubbing. If its drawing 15,000 people to it every Friday and Saturday night throughout the year then it must be having a negative effect on proper clubs that aren't just a massive empty shell of an IKEA.
The charity bit is indeed dodge. Seems to be setup in a way to defend them from criticism, problems and possible closure orders, like the recent council hearing described in the article. Smart move- i suppose you would want to protect your interest that is apparently generating £1million turnover per event from being taken away from you.
