Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ)

It is hard to argue against the ULEZ, who would argue for dirtier air for people to breathe, more lung problems and more death?

I can see them requiring cleaner and cleaner cars in the future and expanding to cover greater geographical areas.

Richer drivers won't be so badly affected because they will likely already own newer and cleaner cars or even electric cars, or can afford them. More budget drivers however will eventually be caught and have to exchange their older vehicles for newer ones at some expense even given any exchange or scrappage schemes that may be in existence at the time.

And occurring around the same time as ULEZ expansion comes the law that the only new cars for sale will be electric. So the car park will go through two significant changes ending up with a lot more electric and more cleaner newer vehicles.

By then there should have been a revolution in charging and range of electric vehicles from a corresponding evolution in car battery technology. I suppose it is also likely that a lot of petrol stations will evolve into charging stations or just close as fewer cars need petrol and diesel.

At the moment my 2007 petrol car passes current ULEZ limits but one step improvement in the levels will see me needing to upgrade, steer clear of ULEZ areas or sometimes pay the charge.

The future is panning out, right before our eyes.

It’s interesting that the initial expansion of the ULEZ zone to the North/ South Circular boundaries a few years ago didn’t attract even 10% of the amount of vitriol, press exposure, hostility or political opposition as this further expansion has.

I can only conclude that the outer Greater London boroughs and their adjacent counties are full of thick Tory gammon. Perhaps we should build a Trump-style wall along the N & S Circular to shelter us from all the oafs surrounding us from all sides.

I suspect it affected a lot less people.

Could it perhaps be something to do with public transport? How does it compare within the circulars vs outside? Consequently how is car ownership likely compare? How about the average wealth of car owners in the two areas?

Here's two random points in London outside the favoured zone, if I set off after an 8am Sunday breakfast I'll hopefully get there in time for dinner. It's 10x quicker to drive.

Quicker to walk !

But yes, you are probably correct re public transport.

It’s worth pointing out that the same people who are anti-ltn or ulez, would be anti-tram, anti-bus lane and anti-anything which reduces road space.

So they aren’t pro anything which makes driving less necessary

Covid drove a lot of people into the arms of, to be polite, fucking lunatics

I was thinking this but the previous expansion was Oct 21, recent enough that the loons were already going on about LTNs, 15 minute cities and WEF no car ownership nonsense. It's accelerated since then though for sure.

The recent fuss is being driven by Tory run boroughs. The previous expansion affected (mainly) Labour run areas I think. So there may well have been individuals who were against it but they didn’t have a political voice.

What a pile of steaming shit. People that were priced out of and decanted from labour voting boroughs because of the ongoing social cleansing and gentrfication of London will be affected just as much as a few fucking tories. It's not thick tory gammon that knock there bollox out on a daily basis keeping London serviced, maintained and functioning. I didn't see anything in the news about hard working labour voters being immune from the changes or not being entitled to be pissed off or concerned about there lively hoods.

Car ownership is significantly higher in the outer boroughs. 69% of outer borough Londoners have access to a car compared to 42% for the inner boroughs. Also, poorer Londoners in outer boroughs are more likely to have access to a car - 30% compared to 13%.

I don't know the reason why but I suspect a major factor is poorer public transport. This is even worse for those who live on the boundary with the Home Counties. Regular usable public transport more or less falls off a cliff at the outer boundary in some areas. I live a few miles outside the outer boundary and am fortunate to have decent rail service and bus service even at the weekends but if I was to live in the next village over they have no buses whatsoever at the weekend! So anyone living just inside the outer boundary who needs to travel outside, especially at the weekends, might be a little upset at having to pay £12.50 per day.

I visited some friends just inside the new ULEZ on Friday. They've recently retired and don't have quite so much money as they used to and neither of their aging cars are compliant. One of them goes to church on Sundays and the church is a few miles outside the zone so they were particularly annoyed they'd have to pay the charge every Sunday.

Spot on. It might be Tory boroughs who are objecting politically, but the people worst affected will be regular folk who rely on cars to get around/to work and can’t afford compliant vehicles. They are unlikely (in the main) to be Tory gammons.

They are unlikely (in the main) to be Tory gammons.
Correct. Even if some of them are there'll still be just as many that aren't. But he fuck those decent working class people trying to support themselves and their families cause a few posh fuckers whom it won't particularly affect might be mildly irritable for week or two whilst they wait for the new £80k Tesla to arrive. Fist bumps all round

The air quality where we live was noticeably worse when the Congestion charge and then ULEZ were introduced, as we live on the edge of them, and the traffic here increased as a result. So, yeah, I'm looking forward to cleaner air. Our car is compliant so no issues for us.

Someone nearby, however, isn't as pleased, they parked this Khan-o-van on West Drive, Furzedown (they think that's where Khan lives, it might be, I don't know?)View attachment 389469
No longer there. It did feel like performance art 🎨 show is over... Wonder what happened to it. It's a free parking spot so couldn't havd been towed away for that.

I saw a badly painted sign with "ULEZ!" and an arrow on Sunday. Bizarrely it was around 2 miles into the ULEZ zone so not at all useful. Was gone today. Perhaps the sign maker has moved it.

Or perhaps ... shows over, everyone just gets on with their lives breathing cleaner air. :)

Feels fresher on a bike ride but probably just psychosomatic. 👃

I was banned from the main Anti-Ulez facebook group for trolling the spongebrain racists on there. There another group now grifting cash from the boomers on some spurious legal case that they are convinced will turn over the whole scheme. Plums.

I've realised that a big issue is that people outside London assume we're all being made to pay for anything that isn't electric or a hybrid (and that this is coming their way imminently), whereas even my shitty 15+ year combustion engine car doesn't fall under ULEZ and it affects fewer than 10% of vehicales from what I've seen,

The sound and fury seems to have died down. I haven’t seen any angry media reports of motorists failing to reach dying grannies because they can’t afford £12.50.

Not sure - posted by the twatty ex Tory councillor today though. Imagine ULEZ is the one thing that drives you to hunger strike?!

There's about 30 people there. 5 assorted vans plastered with NO ULEZ. A couple of gazebos and portaloos.

2 SUVs beeped. No cars whilst I was about.
