Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ)

I thought the ULEZ charge was £12 a day. So how did that work out at £24?

She was saying some have to stay overnight or something.

We've got a CAZ (Clean Air Zone) in Bristol now. Was prompted to post on this as I read message on Facebook musicians group about being stung for 24 quid driving to a gig. As it went past midnight. I do think maybe it should just be a charge for a 24 hr period. But the mini owners thing is just childish whining.

ON radio this morning, they had some moaning mini from the classic mini club lots of them may give up the London to Brighton run because 24 quid. Pathetic FFS. if you can afford to keep basically an old inefficient polluting car on the road just for fun but 24 quid is gonna spoil your hobby, get some fucking perspective.

classic mini would be over 25 year old and was would not need to pay it :hmm:

All the people who drive into eg croydon or Barnet or whatnot too for work or shipping
To be honest, that's Mission Accomplished. The whole intent is to discourage people from driving into London. We heard all these arguments 20 years ago when the Congestion Charge came in.

and was the cc brought in for areas like morden or barking? we're not now talking about people driving into the west end for shopping but people who live on the fringes of london driving to outer london for routine shopping, not to nip down to fortnums for loose tea

Most (most!) of the fringes of London are perfectly well served by public transport. It's just that the people who live in those places think it's for plebs. Most of the largest shops tend to be outside of the GL boundary for tax reasons anyhow. Not going to hurt anyone going to Lakeside or Bluewater, is it?

Edit: I should add that I am sympathetic, but it's an ongoing trend in a number of cities for good reason. It's never going to be a good time to bring it in, so rather sooner than later.

bit of a bugger to get to if you're just north of barnet or south of croydon, though, bluewater and lakeside, if you want to get in a week's shopping, to go to dartford or thurrock

You'd go to Caterham or Potters Bar if you were dead set on driving. Big whoop. It's not like civilisation ends at the GLA boundary.

It's not just central London that is taking a stand against cars though, Bristol possibly, Cambridge, Edinburgh I believe. I guess there are many towns and cities watching and learning, well hopefully, from London before going down a similar route themselves.

Croydon to Barnet, the easiest way by car would be the M25 with or without ULEZ and congestion charging.
Incidentally many of the good people of Fulham and hopping mad about the clean air neighbourhood scheme things saying it adds to congestion. They don't seem to appreciate that
it is their car use that is causing the said congestion.

i don't know why, i imagine far more people drive into london and drive out within 12 hours than stay for most of a 24 hour period
I only really know the arguments from my industry - things like a band arriving at 5pm for a soundcheck in a venue, then leaving just after midnight. Currently they’ll pay twice.

Ultimately, tough shit, pay up. But I can at least see the “this is a bit unfair” argument.

It is not a great time to bring the ULEZ in obviously but who's fault is that.... Boris Johnson. He sat back and told everyone the problem will fix itself and everyone will be driving electric cars by now.
the pollution was probably even worse during his Mayoralty. Khan is simply trying to fix it now. The ULEZ is not targeted enough but it's a start and it's a problem that ought to fade away.

seems to me it'd be fairer to have a range of 'passes' for say 4 hours, 8 hours, 12 hours and so on which aren't restricted by date, so you could have people drive into the ulez for a range of reasons and choose the ones which suit their needs so that the inequity you raise need not occur.

Regardless of how good or bad the adjustments being made are, those adjustments are very necessary and long overdue.
They really need doing and doing sooner rather than later.

Just fit people with an RFID chip and have a box in the car that can amplify the signal when in use, and you could charge down to the second.
