Not quite what was asked for in the OP but he's hated by his boss/other detectives and so is human. Peter Davison with Sean Hughes who's also good.
 
It was being shown on Drama - Freeview ch.20. Remember seeing it first time around and it came across very true to the books which I read in the mid nineties.

Davison was also good as the 20s/30s detective Campion. Brian Glover played his sidekick iirc.
 
After several false starts ITT, I can finally suggest something nobody else has. Copying my post from the Disney+ thread to save writing it again:

Only Murders in the Building. A brand new dark comedy crime miniseries created and starring Steve Martin, with Martin Short and Selima Gomez as the other main leads. Very good and entertaining so far :)
