Travel plans, abandoned holidays and refund advice

pfft

i dream of travel every night. a mate just called me up to disucss new urbex travel opportunities in the former E Blok - and he liked the sound of a week travelling the entire route one in iceland in a 4WD. he has alos beeen dreaming of travel

I'm thinking about treating myself to a trip to the Chinese food wholesalers or maybe B&M. Both about 20 mins walk from home. But will there be queues? I'm fully expecting the trade shows that I planned to go to in Italy in the autumn to be cancelled for social distancing reasons, I didn't go to the February editions (which alarmingly happened to be just a few miles outside of the initially lockdowned area).
I had signed the flight free 2020 pledge so I would've gone by train, but I almost feel like signing that pledge this year was cheating. It's been a piece of piss to stick to it.

Frau Bahn Hayes flying, yet due to shit she booked Lisbon in May for a birthday, Paris in June for a gig (Eurostar) and Dublin in July for another gig. Plus Japan in July for holiday. Looks like all of it is canned.

Yeah I see a lot of them are doing the whole nasty flight credit thing now.

I'm in the same boat as many with Vueling. Flights cancelled, pressed the I want a refund button, yet this week was sent an email with flight credit. Obviously not what I wanted. I have to ring a number for a full refund. Great, except the number sends you round in circles to various recorded messages no matter what option you press. I've pressed them all.

Via some venting on Twitter another person managed to provide me with a different number that worked. Sadly they say they can't process refunds for flights in May until May. So here's hoping they haven't gone into adminstation by then as this is all clearly a bait and switch tactic by them all.

One assumes a section 75 on credit card should get your money back still if worse comes to the worse.

However the other part of my trip. Spanish F1 GP the accomodation and race tickets as a GroupOn offer. It would have been in a couple of weeks. Heard nothing from the supplier (europlayas) at all, not even if they plan to honur rescheduled dates, or offer to provide instead for next years race. Emailed them, no response. Messaged Groupon, keep telling me to contact Europlayas. If no response from them in next 7 days I'm thinking of section 75 Groupon as well if they keep coming back with contact the supplier. As they clearly don't want to help either, but it was them that took my money.

owed about £1400 in total.

Portugal is doing a scheme where if you postpone rather than cancel your holiday then its valid untill 2021, if you cancel then you get a refund.

The new scheme comes into effect on Friday and applies to bookings through travel agencies or at accredited holiday accommodation, such as hotels or Airbnb properties, initially scheduled to take place between March 13 and Sept. 30 this year.

The vouchers are valid until Dec. 31, 2021, and eligible for refund in 2022 if the traveler is unable to make the trip during this time. Those who become unemployed between now and Sept. 30 can request a full refund.

If your flight is cancelled you get a refund. That’s the law. Some carriers are making that difficult but you need to preserve (or book with a travel agent and they will do it for you :p ;) )

If not cancelled but you can’t go due to restrictions you can get a credit, which the airline is not obligated to give you, but all of them are. Of course, if they go bust it will be worthless...

I got unexpected refunds from hotels on booking.com when I asked nicely but I decided to just take the various flight and rail vouchers offered and not push for refunds. The T&C aren't ideal as they don't allow me to rebook the equivalent trips for March/April 2021 but I'm going to try and just cobble them all together in a 1-week extravaganza in the summer.

I had a ski trip booked for Sweden at Easter. Sweden annoyed me as they weren't cancelling things so my problem was just getting there. They rolled 80% of the value over into next year but the insurance claim for the other 20% has been refused because cancellations due to FCO advice aren't covered. Technically, I cancelled because (a) all the flights were cancelled, and (2) even if they weren't cancelled 'non-essential' travel was illegal. I don't think either of those situations are explicitly mentioned in the insurance so I have some work to do trying to get that sorted.

I was surprised this morning to get a mail from Expedia allowing me to refund my non refundable hotel booking for the end of May in London. So that's something back.

In terms of my post above Europlayas finally got back to me today saying they are hoping to honour the booking for the F1 race and hotel for the re-arranged dates, although again, this feels like a simple bait and switch to keep hold of money for now knowing full well it's going to impossible to do the race with fans in attendance. I can't see how any sporting events will have fans at them for the remainder of this year, or if they do, how they would even implement social distancing safely. The only advantage may be that only people who already have tickets will be allowed in and any unsold tickets at this stage will remain unsold. But no idea how many tickets would have been sold already. I suppose if I wanted to take the risk, I may allow them to carry it over to the 2021 race, but the risk of allowing them to do that, or taking flight credit etc is that if they go bust in the interim, getting money back will be even more difficult, especially as the accomodation and race tickets is over a grand on it's own. The OH has had a good deal out of this so far as the only money she gave me towards it so far had been £100. lol.

I was due to fly to Osaka with Finnair on 1/5. I booked it thru Travel Trolley, who I've no previous experience with, but they at least responded quickly when I asked about a refund - said they've asked the airline but I should only expect they will offer me a credit note for which I'll probably have to wait 3/4 weeks. I'll wait and see what I get - if it covers the same period next year I'm minded to accept it so long as the cost of the flights next year will be guaranteed for the same amount. If not, I'll press for a refund. As for my accommodation, I already got a full hassle-free refund from Airbnb weeks ago.

We're owed about £100 each from easyJet and they offer a 'any flight anywhere' scheme to try and put you off claiming a refund. I wonder if that might actually be a very good idea as I expect flights will be expensive once they eventually kick off again.

We're the same. Got ALL accommodation amount back with a little bit of help from the host

We're just waiting to hear now from EasyJet - this is the "big one" with the flights around the £1200 mark - so it would be dead handy getting this back . . . I think it's unlikely but Mrs Voltz pointed out we have holiday insurance that . . . maybe, covers pandemics (pandemics was specifically mentioned . . . so fingers crossed)

I was due to have a holiday to the Canaries in March. This was with love holidays. They were a nightmare about giving a refund and only wanted to send a credit note. Dealing with them has been an absolute nightmare. Managed to get it mostly resolved using this.

They do all the complaints and escalate it all after the company has not replied. It was easy to use. Was going to take them to court but you have to pay 70 quid up front.

They finally got back to me today 25 days after I put in the resolver case and have refunded the hotel but I'm still waiting for the flight money and it looks like that will be an awful long time. I'm very relieved to get he hotel money back though and might open another case with Ryanair to get that refunded too unless I can find a use for the flight vouchers. I will happily give them to anyone who needs to get home or visit family but I will not be travelling with Ryanair again as they have behaved terribly.

Best way forward seems to be using resolver to deal with the travel agents and letting them deal with it. Good luck with it all everyone.

Finnair has cancelled their Helsinki-Osaka flight on 1st May, therefore you are entitled to a full refund.

Resolver is fantastic.

Taking companies to court is tricky right now, cos the courts are closed for anything other than serious criminal business.

Airlines are taking a long time to get money back, but they are doing it, Ryanair about 5 weeks, that's if the flight was cancelled, if it still went you can only have a voucher and they are not obligated to do that.

Hotel we had booked in Tokyo for July emailed and asked me if I'd like a refund as the Olympics have been postponed. YES PLEASE! It was a non-refundable, pay up front £3500 for 8 room nights for the Ibis Shinjuku, about £430 per room per night, non-Olympic rates are closer to £100. So even if by some miracle we do still go to Japan we can book the same place for much less or a much nicer place, also for much less...but I suspect Japan will have to wait until the spring. In which case it'll be trying to get money back from Lufthansa/ANA, who I think are both being fairly reasonable.

O'Leary from Ryanair was saying he expected low prices to try and tempt folk onto planes despite their fears. But theres too many unknowns. Its all a guess. Its a vicious circle as people ask for refunds coz they are worried the airlines will go bust....which makes it more likely the airlines go bust.

We're supposed to be going to Mallorca in July through Love Holidays so I am expecting to go through this then.

If TUI cancels the holiday they must give the money back. If the customer chooses to defer they can get vouchers. If the customer can’t travel due to restrictions (such as to the US for non-US citizens right now, but the flight/holiday still goes, voucher.

My friend has a flight booked to Chicago with Americal Airlines next Saturday. The travel agent have issued her with a ticket and it looks like flight will go ahead. She doesn't want to go, but doesn't want to lose the money obviously.

Can she claim a voucher based on the fact the Americans won't let her in? If the agent knows they won't let her in, why have they issued a ticket?

If the flight goes (and it will do, Americans flights have been running) then a voucher is all that she will be entitled to.

When did the agent issue the ticket?

Actually, if it is 9th or 16th May, it will be a British Airways flight as American isn't doing the Chicago route on those dates, same rules apply though.

My BA flight to London at the end of June just got cancelled. I'd already had given up on the trip but I suppose now I'm due for a refund but they only offer a voucher. I'd rather have the money but of course nobody is answering the phone for the refund helpline given.

If the flight is cancelled you can have a refund, sadly you will need to phone as they are not processing any other way unless you booked via a travel agent. The phone takes forever as they have a massively reduced workforce, some of my punters are saying that BA are shit and are missing a chance to make their PR shine by not employing 100's more staff to process the refunds more quickly. The reality is that BA, like all other carriers, is fighting for its very survival. Your flag carrier is losing $1 million EVERY HOUR right now. As profitable as LH Group is, they can't afford to keep that up for long...

Thank you.

She booked a long time ago but the ticket was only issued in the last couple of days, which made me wonder why they would do that if they know she will be refused entry into the US.

Doesn’t sound right; anything other than the full fare would need to have the ticket issued within three days of the reservation being made. The full fare to Chicago is around £1200 in economy...

ETA: Full fare on BA is currently £2088.45!!!

They might greatly reduce destinations on offer, that's if they don't go bust.

i phones vueling yesterday now we are in May. Surprised to get through at the 2nd attempt. Chap was helpful and professional and I’d received the email saying refund confirmed before he’d even told me he’d processed it. Was surprised how easy it was once I got through but I guess the call handlers know people have already jumped through hurdles to get this far.

now to see if/when it appears back on my card.
